Brockton, Mass. - Quebec starter Michel Simard threw six and one-third superb innings before his club's bullpen held off a Brockton rally as the Capitales edged the Rox, 6-3, in a Can-Am League matchup at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Quebec got on the board before even registering an out, as 2B Josh Colafemina walked and SS Ivan Naccarata subsequently blasted a home run, making it a 2-0 game. The Capitales then added another run in the first when 1B Alex Nunez singled, stole second, and came home on C Patrick D'Aoust's single.

Brockton's bats were largely silent through the first six innings, mustering just one hit off of Simard. The Rox did manage to bring home a run in the third, as LF Mike Conroy led off the inning with a triple and was brought home on C Chris Grossman's RBI groundout.

The Capitales added to their lead with CF Goefrey Tomlinson's leadoff home run in the seventh, but Brockton made the score 4-2 in their half of the inning on DH Clyde Williams' run-scoring single.

Quebec then tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth, with RF Jared Lemieux first singling, moving to second on a groundout, and scoring on Colafemina's double. After Colin Lynch came on to relieve Brad Hertzler, Naccarata, the first batter Lynch faced, singled home Colafemina, making it 6-2, Capitales.

Brockton made things interesting in the ninth; after 3B Phillip Cuadrado walked and 2B Scott Wearne singled, Conroy brought home Cuadrado with a single to make it a 6-3 game. SS Dominic Ramos then walked to load the bases; after that, CF Chris Valencia brought the count to 3-2 before flying out to Lemieux at the right-field wall.

On a light-hitting night for both sides, Naccarata and Conroy were the only players on either team with multiple hits.

Simard earned the victory, allowing just three hits and striking out four, while Mike Smith took the loss, throwing seven innings and striking out five. Smith allowed three hits in the first inning but just one, Tomlinson's home run, the rest of the way.

With the win, Quebec extends its first-half lead to two and one-half games.

The two teams meet Wednesday evening in the second of the four-game set; the Capitales' Matthew Rusch takes on Brockton's Buster Lussier.
