ROX LOSE LEAD, GAME TO SPIRIT, 6-5
LYNN --- Three Rox relievers gave up five runs to host North Shore in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing the Spirit (11-11) to rally for a stunning 6-5 victory over Brockton (14-12).
Pinch hitter Garrett Weir and Yuri Sanchez collected successive RBI singles and Rob Fischer followed two batters later with a two-out two-run base hit to give North Shore their first lead.
Ryan McCally allowed a lead-off single to Jake Daubert to open the ninth before retiring Craig Lewis, Brian Jones, and Kris Zacuto in order for his third save.
It was a game that looked destined for a Rox victory from the start. Not five minutes into the game, Brockton was already on the scoreboard, taking advantage of two errors and two singles to score twice.
After an unearned North Shore run in the second inning made the score 2-1, the Rox struck back in the fifth, thanks to another pair of Spirit misplays. Mike Scanzano led off with a walk, moved to second on a throwing error by catcher Alex Trezza, and advanced to third on Eugene Julien's groundout. Saul Bustos hit a bouncer to second baseman Marcos Agramonte who threw wildly home, letting Julien score. Bustos reached second on the play, thereby putting himself in position to score on a Lewis base hit, expanding the Brockton lead to 4-1.
The Rox added an insurance run in the the seventh. Julien singled to start the frame and found himself on third after a throwing error by Spirit reliever Gregg Pleeter and a Bustos single. Lewis hit a shallow drive to left and the Rox rookie tagged up at third, coming home with the fifth run of the evening for the visitors.
In the eighth, however, it all came apart. Travis Oglesby singled and Brian Macchi drew a walk to knock out reliever Jon Koch. Tony Stutz entered, first surrendering a base hit to Alex Trezza to load the bases, and then fanning Eric Storey for the first out. Weir and Sanchez followed with singles to score Oglesby and Macchi. Keith Ferguson came in for Stutz and gave up an RBI groundout to Agramonte that pushed Weir and Sanchez into scoring position and set the stage for Fischer's clutch blow.
Kevin Beavers threw 6.0 innings without allowing an earned run for the Rox, but received just a no-decision for his efforts. Stutz (2-4) shoulders the loss, while Pleeter (1-0) picks up his first victory in relief of Spirit starter Bryan Morse.
Brockton wraps up the three game series with North Shore on Thursday night at 7:05. Brad Guy (0-1, 2.84) gets the start for the Rox against Spirit ace John Kelly (3-1, 1.73).
