Rox Knock Off Colonials To Wrap Up Road Trip

Brockton Rox News Release
(Pittsfield, Mass. - August 14, 2011) - Keith Brachold wasted no time putting Brockton (18-9, 44-29) on top early at Wahconah Park on Sunday, as his two-run blast in the first inning helped guide the Rox to a 4-2 victory over Pittsfield (16-12, 41-33).
Chris Valencia scored on the Brachold round-tripper in the first that gave Brockton a 2-0 lead; but Brachold wasn't done there. In his next at-bat, the rightfielder ripped a lead-off double to open up the fourth inning. That was followed by a Chris Grossman single that scored Brachold and gave the Rox a 3-0 lead over the Colonials.
Pitching with an early lead, Dustin Birosak (7-1) was brilliant for the Rox in his first start in almost two weeks, as the southpaw surrendered just four hits through the first seven frames, and was perfect through the first three.
Despite the fact that Brockton committed three errors in the contest, Birosak was aided by his defense throughout much of the game. The Rox made a handful of spectacular plays, including back-to-back incredible diving catches in the seventh inning from Brachold and Valencia that robbed the Colonials of extra bases.
Pittsfield finally solved Birosak in the eighth inning, as Jermel Lomackscored on an RBI single from Jerod Edmondson. That was followed by a sacrifice fly from Danny Bombackthat plated Quentin Davis and cut the deficit to one.
In total, Birosak allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits, while walking none and striking out two in seven and 1/3 innings of work.
The Rox added some insurance in the ninth inning, as Grossman would score on a sacrifice fly from Trey Hernandez to make it 4-2.
With his team on top by a pair of runs, Jake Hale shut the door in the final frame to seal the victory and earn his second save in as many nights. The save was Hale's 14th of the season, and his 12th of the second half.
David Qualben (5-6) went the distance for Pittsfield in the loss. The lefty conceded four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while fanning two and walking one.
Brachold paced the Brockton offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and two runs scored. Grossman was solid as well, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Edmondson, Billy Mottram, and Peter Fatse each had a pair of hits for the Colonials, who hit the road for a four-game series with the Rockland Boulders beginning Monday night.
With the win, Brockton now moves into a tie for first place in the Can-Am League second half standings with the Worcester Tornadoes.
The Rox open a seven-game homestand at Campanelli Stadium, and it all starts Monday night as the Quebec Capitales come to town for four games. RHP Mike Smith (8-5, 3.99) toes the rubber for Brockton, while RHP Bryan Rembisz(5-1, 3.17) gets the nod for the visiting Capitales at 7:05 p.m.
