Brockton Rox News Release
(Pittsfield, Mass.) - John Kelly was sharp once again on the mound for Brockton (17-9, 43-29), as the Rox cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Pittsfield Colonials (16-11, 41-32) behind solid pitching and timely offense.
Kelly (1-0) scattered one run on four hits through five innings, while walking three and striking out five. For Kelly, it was his 27th career win with the Rox.
Brockton jumped on the board first in the second inning when Tucker Nathans tripled to score Dan Barbero. As Nathans slid into third, an errant throw from Danny Bomback bounced into the Pittsfield dugout and allowed Nathans to score the second run of the game.
The Colonials answered in the bottom half of the frame as Chris Torres scored on a sacrifice fly from Quentin Davis, making it 2-1.
After pitching fairly effectively through the first six innings, Pittsfield starter Chad Paronto ran into trouble in the seventh when Barbero led off the inning with a solo home run, his fifth of the year. Dominic Ramos followed that with an RBI triple that plated Trey Hernandez and gave the Rox a 4-1 lead.
Paronto (7-6) departed after six and 1/3 innings of work, in which he conceded four runs (three earned) on four hits, while walking two and fanning five.
Scott Knazek cut the lead to two with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Brockton tallied two more runs in the eighth courtesy of a bases-loaded, two-run double from Barbero, making it a 6-2 ballgame.
Pittsfield rallied in the bottom half of the inning to score a run, as Angel Molina drove in Billy Mottram for his 27th RBI in the last 14 games. However, the Colonials comeback was cut short when Brockton's Jake Hale worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save of the season.
Barbero led the Rox offense, as he went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, while Chris Valencia finished 2-for-5 and stole his league-leading 35th base of the season.
Bomback had the only multi-hit game of the night for Pittsfield, as he went 3-for-3 at the dish.
With the win Brockton moves within a half game of the Worcester Tornadoes in the Can-Am League second half standings, and remains seven games behind the Quebec Capitales in the overall standings.
Meanwhile, Pittsfield stands in third place in the second half standings, just two games behind the Tornadoes, and is fourth in the overall standings.
The two clubs conclude the series at Wahconah Park on Sunday at 2 p.m. LHP Dustin Birosak (6-1, 2.97) makes the start for the Rox, while LHP David Qualben (5-5, 3.98) gets the nod for the Colonials.
