Brockton Rox News Release

August 28, 2005 - The Brockton Rox (25-12) held on in the 9th inning to beat the New Jersey Jackals (19-20) 7-6 and take two out of three at Yogi Berra Stadium. They finish their six-game road trip at 3-3 with a magic number of 7.

Kris Zacuto went 3-for-3 with three RBI for Brockton and starter Brad Guy pitched into the ninth to lead the way for the Rox. It looked like Guy would get the complete game after manager Ed Nottle visited the mound and returned to the dugout without his pitcher with two outs in the ninth, but the righthander allowed a two-run homer to Jake Whitesides and Nottle returned to bring in Tony Stutz. Stutz faced just one batter, catcher Mike Rucci, striking him out on four pitches to end the game.

Things started well for the Rox. Their first three batters all reached base with a single. Matt Cucurullo was the only one who scored, though, when Craig Lewis' double play grounder stranded Eugene Julien on third base and erased Jake Daubert.

Guy surrendered the one-run lead in the 3rd inning when he gave up singles to Rucci, Zach Smithlin, and Ricardo Cordova to start the inning. Following a double play ball, Francisco Lebron jacked a two run homer to give the Jackals a 3-1 lead.

The Rox got one back in the 4th when Eddie Gerald scored after reaching on a leadoff double and Brockton got two more in the 6th thanks to a walk to Willie King and consecutive singles from Kris Zacuto, Brian Jones, and Hector Henriquez.

After New Jersey tied it at four in the 6th, the Rox responded with three in the 7th when Daubert, Lewis, and Gerald all scored. It looked like that would be enough based on the pitching performance of Brad Guy. The Jackals made it close in the 9th, but Tony Stutz was there to shut the door.

Guy (1-3) went 8.2 innings for Brockton, allowing six runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out six.

The Rox return to Campanelli Stadium to face the Can-Am Grays in the start of a five-games-in-three-days series. At 6:05 on Monday, the two teams will complete a game suspended from August 13 due to the curfew rule. Once that game (officially in the top of the eleventh, tied 7-7) is completed, the regularly scheduled contest will take place at 7:05. Gates open at Campanelli Stadium at 4:30.
