Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON - The Brockton Rox (8-8) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory in ten innings over the New Haven County Cutters (4-3). A crowd of 5,662, the fourth largest in Rox history, served as the official scorers of the contest.

Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd received the start for the Rox. Boyd pitched seven innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits. "Oil Can" walked one and struck out four, but received his third no decision.

The Rox took the lead in the fifth inning. Craig Lewis led off with a single and scored on a two-run home run by Guye Senjem. After five innings the Rox led, 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, the Cutters stole away the lead. With the bases loaded, Bill Peavey plated Keto Anderson on a groundout to second base. Jeff Brooks scored Darren Ciraco and Mike O'Keefe with a singe to give New Haven a 3-2 lead.

Rox fans made their first official scoring determination of the evening in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Daubert grounded a ball towards second baseman Keith Stegbauer. Stegbauer fielded the ball cleanly, but threw the ball over the head of first baseman Bill Peavey. The fans ruled that an accurate throw would have retired Daubert, and gave Stegbauer an error. The play brought home Matt Cucurullo to tie the game, 3-3.

The fans charged two errors to the Rox in the top of the seventh inning. One when Hector Henriquez misplayed a ball allowing Chas Terni to reach base. The other when Al Roach misplayed a fly ball by Darren Ciraco. The error charged to Roach allowed Terni to score putting New Haven up, 4-3.

The Rox regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Craig Lewis singled, Brian Jones walked, and Al Roach was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Senjem brought home Lewis, and an errant throw by O'Keefe allowed Jones to score. The two run play put the Rox up 5-4.

In the ninth, New Haven tied the game when Andy Larned walked and scored on Keto Anderson's single. The game remained tied, 5-5, until the bottom of the tenth when Jake Daubert singled off of Andy Weimer with the bases loaded to score Mike Scanzano and give the Rox a 6-5 win.

Joey Cole (2-1) got the win for the Rox. Nick Rowand (2-1) was charged with the loss. The Rox and Cutters will meet in the final game of the series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
