Brockton Rox News Release

For the second straight night, New Jersey hammered Brockton's starting pitcher. This time the Jackals (18-20) hung on, defeating the Rox (24-12) 10-6 on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

One game after he was brought into pitch (and giving up Brad Rosenblat's go-ahead double), leftfielder Horace Lawrence went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Each Jackal in the starting lineup with the exception of catcher Mike Rucci touched home plate.

After starter Isaac Pavlik allowed a run in the top of the first, the Jackals struck back quickly, scoring four times in the bottom of the innings against Brockto southpaw Kevin Beavers.

In the second, the Jackals stepped up their attack. RBI singles by Steve Checksfield and Ricardo Cordova knocked Beavers from the game. Both came round to score when Matt Hagan welcomed new pitcher Manny Tejada with a three-run homer to left. Lawrence followed with a solo shot to right for a 10-1 lead.

Admirably, Tejada escaped the frame and went on to hold New Jersey scoreless over the next six innings.

Meanwhile, his teammates scored one in the fifth, one in the sixth (on a Kris Zacuto roundtripper), and two in the ninth to make the home fans nervous. With runners at first and second and the tying run in the on-deck circle, Andrew Salvo fouled out to end the game.

Pavlik (6-5) picked up the victory, scattering 13 hits over eight-plus innings. Beavers (5-5) took the loss, lasting only 1.2 innings while giving up eight runs on nine hits.

On Sunday, Brockton and New Jersey play the finale of their three-game weekend series at 2:05 at Yogi Berra Stadium.
