Behind a dominating effort by starter Ryan Bicondoa, The North Shore Spirit downed the Grays 8-2 Saturday night to pick up a much-needed victory.
Bicondao (8-5) tossed 7 2/3 innings of two run baseball. He limited the Gays to only six hits while striking out seven. Glen Keaton (2-8) took the loss for the vistors.
The Grays opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first. Leadoff man Bernard Caston singled and then stole second, his 4th theft of the season. With two outs, Mark Burke delivered an RBI basehit to left, scoring Caston with the games first run.
North Shore responded with a run of their in the bottom half of the inning. Rob Fischer laced a one out double into the corner in left and scored two batters later on a single by first baseman Josh Tranum.
Darren Ciraco put the Grays back out in front in the sixth. With runners on first and second and two down, Ciraco lined a basehit over an out stretched Marcos Agramonte to plate Angel Valdez with the go-ahead run.
The Spirit offense came alive in the home half of the inning. A Brian Macchi double, a walk to Cleatus Davidson and a single by BJ Weed loaded the bases with no outs. Marcos Agramonte picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Macchi with the game-tying run. Garrett Weir followed with a double that plated a pair and after six complete North Shore held a 4-2 advantage.
The Spirit tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh highlighted by a Travis Oglesby solo shot to deep right, his 19th homerun of the season. Brian Macchi's eighth inning RBI basehit pushed the North Shore lead to six runs.
With the win, coupled with Brockton's loss, the Spirit now trail the Rox by 2.5 games in the North Division second half standings. All nine North Shore starters collected at least one hit. A crowd of 2,532 watched as the Spirit evened their season series with the Grays, 4-4.
