
Rox fall to Cutters, 11-10

BROCKTON - On Sunday afternoon, the Brockton Rox (8-9) lost a high scoring slugfest to the New Haven County Cutters (5-12), 11-10. The teams combined for 31 hits and six errors in the game. For the third straight time, the game came down to Cutters closer Andy Weimer facing the Rox Jake Daubert.
New Haven got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Mike O'Keefe was driven in by Jeff Brooks to give the Cutters the early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, the Rox came back. Saul Bustos and Craig Lewis singled to get on base, and both scored on a bases loaded double by Kris Zacuto. The Rox led after the opening inning, 2-1.
In the top of the second Nick Hiter got on base with a two-out double. Keto Anderson followed with a double of his own, scoring Hiter and tying the game, 2-2.
The Rox broke the tie in the bottom of the second. Bustos doubled Brian Weingart home and Matt Cucurullo scored on Daubert's groundout. Lewis then lined a double to the leftfield corner, scoring Bustos, and Guye Senjem capped the inning with a bloop to centerfield plating Lewis for a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth, New Haven County collected five straight hits. Derrick Gibson led off with a double and scored on a Vinny Esposito single. After Chas Terni's ground rule double, Hiter singled scoring Esposito and Terni. O'Keefe singled scoring Hiter, and then scored on Jeff Brooks' single. The six run inning gave New Haven an 8-6 lead.
The Rox cut into the Cutters lead in the top of the fifth. Al Roach doubled off of Ryan Bonesio and scored on a single by Brian Weingart. After five innings, the Cutters led, 8-7.
The Rox tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Daubert. The 8-8 tie did not last for long. In the top of the ninth, Keto Anderson tripled scoring Keith Stegbauer and Chas Terni. Mike Scanzano's throw into third base bounced off Anderson and into foul territory allowing Anderson to score. The Rox trailed, 11-8.
In the bottom of the ninth, Saul Bustos singled to score Brian Jones and Mike Scanzano putting the Rox within a run, 11-10. Daubert came to the plate with two outs to face Weimer. Weimer retired Daubert on Friday night to give the Cutters a 5-4 win, and on Saturday Daubert drove in the Rox winning run off Weimer. Weimer won the rubber match, getting Daubert to fly out ending the game. Weimer (1-0) picked up the win for New Haven, and Tony Stutz (2-2) was charged with the loss.
