Brockton Rox News Release

Despite rallying from four runs down in the eighth inning and two runs down in the tenth, the Brockton Rox (17-16) came up short Friday night in an 10-7 loss to the New York Federals in twelve innings.

The Rox trailed

5-1 after five

frames as Robert Bono struggled in his first return to the rotation since June 17th.

Bono labored through five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out and walking two.

It was a different story for

New York

starter Michael Streaman, who delivered his best outing of the season.

Streaman lasted into the eighth inning, scattering seven hits, while allowing two runs, but just one earned.

The deficit held at four until the bottom of the eighth inning as

Brockton

received excellent relief efforts with two scoreless frames from Jimmer Kennedy and another inning and 1/3 without damage from Daniel Schmidt.

Brockton

's bats came alive in the eighth with back-to-back singles to open the frame from Jorge Jimenez and Melvin Falu that chased Streaman.

Mike Mullen entered and eventually gave up a two run double to Chris Valencia and an RBI single to Mike Torres, before allowing the tying run to score on a wild pitch, evening the tally at 5-5.

Things stayed deadlocked into the tenth, when the Federals would once again take the lead.

Mark Rosen, now on the mound for the Rox, struck out the lead off hitter before giving up a double to Robert Dyer, followed by an intentional pass to Brad Jackson and a walk to Sandy DeLeon to load the bases.

Jacob Fabry then stepped to the dish and singled to plate Dyer and Jackson, giving

New York

a 7-5 lead.

Down to their final out, the Rox answered with a two-out rally in the bottom half of the tenth that started with a Chris Grossman walk.

Valencia

then singled, sending Grossman to third base, before stealing second.

Torres was next and dribbled an infield single that scored Grossman, before

Valencia

came around on a throwing error by Jose Reyes, tying the game once again, this time at 7-7.

After a scoreless eleventh, things got sketchy for Brad Hertzler (0-3) and the Rox defense in the twelfth.

Back-to-back base hits by Dyer and Jackson opened the inning, followed by three errors, three fielders' choices and a sacrifice that resulted in three unearned runs for the Federals and a 10-7 lead.

Third time was the charm for

New York

as Jon Shepard (3-3) refused to relinquish the lead and was able to keep the Rox bats at bay in the final two frames, earning the victory.

The game was the longest of the season for

Brockton

at four hours and seven minutes.

The Rox now head to

Pittsfield

for a holiday weekend series against the Colonials that will begin at

7:00 p.m.

Saturday night as Mike Smith (3-3, 3.18) prepares to toe the rubber for

Brockton

in game one.

The roadtrip continues Sunday afternoon with a

2:00 p.m.

matinee and then Monday night for a

6:30 p.m.

series finale on Independence Day.

The Rox return home to Campanelli Stadium to open a four game set with the Federals beginning Wednesday June 6.
