Brockton Rox News Release
Pittsfield, Mass. - Rox LF Mike Conroy launched a three-run homer in the ninth inning to pull Brockton within one, but it was not enough as the Pittsfield Colonials held on, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon at Wahconah Park, stopping Brockton's nine-game win streak.
The Rox (16-10 second half, 43-30 overall) scored in the first inning for the fourth time in the series, and for the seventh time in eight games. DH Melvin Falu belted his league-leading 18th homer to center field with CF Chris Valencia aboard. Valencia had reached to begin the game on a bunt single, which also continued his on-base streak to 16 games. Falu is now one homer shy of tying the Rox single-season record set by Palmer Karr in 2009.
Pittsfield (15-12, 35-39) answered right back with a two-run blast of their own from 2B Danny Bomback off Rox starting RHP Wayne Lundgren. It was Bomback's sixth home run of the season.
Brockton would plate a single run in the third inning to take the lead back, 3-2. 2B John Parke got aboard on an infield single before a double down the left-field line by 1B Shawn Williams brought him home.
For the second time, the Colonials would quickly answer, tying it with a solo home run from 1B Jerod Edmondson in the bottom of the third. Pittsfield would hit their third homer of the game off Lundgren in the fourth inning, a two-run shot by LF Rafael Cabreja, and the Colonials took the lead for good, 5-3. Pittsfield tacked on another in the sixth on a double by 3B Jason Taylor.
The Rox began the climb back with a run in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by C Chris Grossman, his seventh RBI of the series. Brockton could not do any more damage though, leaving two runners on base. Pittsfield took advantage of a Rox error in the bottom of the seventh to score two unearned runs to take their biggest lead of the day, 8-4.
Against RHP Juan Padilla in the ninth inning, Conroy hit his fourth home run of the year, to bring the Rox back within a run at 8-7, but SS Dominic Ramos struck out to end the game and the winning streak.
Pittsfield starting RHP Miguel A. Flores (7-4) earned the victory, going 6.1 innings and allowing four runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Lundgren (7-5) dropped the decision after throwing just four innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Williams had his third four-hit day of the week for the Rox, finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Parke had his second straight multi-hit game, coming in with two singles. Conroy (2-for-5) and Ramos (2-for-5) also chipped in with multi-hit affairs. Ramos extended his hitting streak to ten games.
The Rox will enjoy a day off on Monday before beginning a three-game series at Campanelli Stadium against New Jersey on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 with RHP Mike Smith (10-3) taking on LHP Ryan Lobban (3-2).
