BROCKTON - The Worcester Tornadoes (4-0) pounded the Brockton Rox (3-1) for 14 runs on 20 hits while four pitchers combined to throw a shutout in a 14-0 dismantling of the Rox on Thursday.
The first game back from the All-Star Break got started on the wrong foot when Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd gave up a first-inning solo home run to Alex Pena. "Oil Can" gave up a solo home run to Chris Colabello in the second inning. In the third inning, Boyd gave up five straight hits in allowing four unearned runs. Boyd did not return to pitch the fourth. In three innings, the right-hander gave up six runs, two earned, on eight hits.
Joey Baker relieved Boyd in the fourth and extended the Rox struggles. Baker gave up five runs on six hits and three walks. Manny Tejada gave up one run on four hits in four innings or relief and Tony Stutz gave up two runs on a hit and two walks in the ninth inning.
For the Tornadoes, Alex Pena (4-2) picked up the win going six innings and striking out six. The Rox managed just three hits and one walk against Pena. Michael Cox, Steve Palazollo, and Dallas Mahan each pitched one inning to complete the combined shutout. Boyd (2-3) suffered the loss for the Rox.
The Rox continue the four-game home series with the Tornadoes on Friday night at Campanelli Stadium. Friday's game will start at 7:05 p.m. and feature a post-game fireworks display.
