New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ – The Brockton Rox took both games of a double header from the New Jersey Jackals, while sweeping their three game set at Yogi Berra Stadium

In game one, the Rox used an offensive explosion in the early innings, to down the Jackals 7-6.

Brockton used a floury of singles to push across two in the top of the first. In the inning, both Brian Jones and Nestor Smith had RBI's.

New Jersey would even the ballgame in the bottom of the second. With runners at second and third, Scott Goodman grounded out scoring one. Alberto Vasquez then tripled, scoring Chris Rowan. On the play, Rox centerfielder Nestor Smith went down with a lower leg injury, and was taken off the field on a stretcher.

The Rox would send 11 batters to the plate in the following inning, while re-taking the lead. RBI base hits by Francisco Matos, Mike Torres, and Kris Zacuto contributed to the inning, as did a two RBI double by Saul Bustos.

In the bottom half of the third, the Jackals would add on two to their total. Both Zack Smithlin and Kevin Grijak drove in runs.

Chris Rowan would hit a solo homerun to lead off the fourth inning for the Jackals, making it a 7-5 Brockton lead.

Kevin Grijak would launch a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh, his ninth of the season, making it a one-run ballgame, but the Jackals would fall short in the end.

Jackals' starter Joel Bennett went only two and two thirds innings. He gave up seven earned runs on eleven hits, in a losing effort.

Kevin Lynn came out of the bullpen for the Rox, and pitched one and one third innings, while only giving up one hit. He picked up his third victory of the 2004 season. Tony Runion picked up his 15th save of the season, despite giving up a homerun.

For Brockton, Chad Stewart reached base five teams with two singles, two walks, and reached on a fielder's choice.

Kevin Grijak was 3-4 with a homerun, for New Jersey.

In Game two, the Rox took advantage of a stunned Jackals team, and completed their three-game series sweep, by a final score of 9-1.

In the third, Saul Bustos tripled for the Rox, scoring two. He came around to score when the next batter, Mike Torres, drove him in on a sacrifice fly.

Brockton would score two more in the top of the fourth. A solo homerun by Kris Zacuto and an RBI single by Mike Sandoval, made it 5-0 in favor of the Rox.

Two more runs would be added onto the Brockton lead, on a fielder's choice by Francisco Matos in the fifth.

The Jackals would score their first and only run in the bottom of the fifth. Zack Smithlin singled, scoring Juan Infante.

Rox second baseman, Mike Torres, added a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth. Through six complete innings, the Rox were ahead 9-1, and that is the way the ballgame ended.

New Jersey starter Brad Whitworth pitched five and two third innings, giving up nine runs, eight earned runs, on 13 hits, while getting the loss.

Scott Martin, of the Rox, was victorious in six innings of work. He scattered six hits, while only giving up one run.
