Brockton Rox News Release
Worcester, Mass. - Worcester starter Shawn Gilblair twirled a complete-game four-hitter as the Tornadoes registered a 7-0 victory over Brockton in a Can-Am League affair at Hanover Insurance Park on Thursday evening. With the win, Worcester extended its second-half lead to a game and a half over the second-place Rox.
Worcester (17-6, 38-32) kicked things off with a pair of runs in the second inning, as C Alex Trezza smacked a one-out double and later came home on an error by Brockton SS Alex Sumner. SS Tony Patane, who reached base on Sumner's error, scored the second run of the frame on a double by CF Cameron Monger with two outs.
The Tornadoes then tacked on three more in the fifth, with RF Ryan Crespiscoring on a wild pitch, Chris Colabello driving home Abraham Nunez with an RBI single, and 3B Mark Minicozzi adding a run-scoring double.
In the sixth, Worcester extended its lead to 7-0 with a pair of solo blasts off the bats of DH Nick Salotti and Crespi.
It was more than enough support for Gilblair (5-5), who was masterful, limiting the Rox to four singles and striking out five while walking just one.
Brockton starter Freddy Flores (6-6) had an uncharacteristically difficult outing, allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits in five and two-thirds innings of work, to take the loss. Brad Hertzler and Jack VanLeur performed serviceably in relief, combining to allow just one hit in two and one-third innings of work.
Crespi and LF Alex Nunez both had 2-for-4 evenings for the Tornadoes.
The Rox (16-8, 42-28) continue their road trip through Massachusetts with a three-game set at Pittsfield, beginning Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Julian Sampson (7-3) toes the slab for Brockton, facing the Colonials' Miguel Flores (2-8).
