St. Cloud Rox News Release
Duluth, MN - A six-run sixth inning propelled St. Cloud (46-15) to its seventh win over Duluth (25-36) this season, a 10-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Rox are now just two wins away from clinching home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. St. Cloud can also earn the best record in Northwoods League history with five wins in its final seven games. For the full Northwoods League standings, click here.
Tied heading into the sixth inning, the Rox tallied six runs on six hits to pull away. St. Cloud got three consecutive RBI hits, including a triple down the left-field line from Otto Kemp (Point Loma Nazarene). Then, Caleb Ricketts (San Diego) brought Kemp in with a single to center, his fifth hit in the last two games.
The inning was capped off by a three-run home run out to left field from Brice Matthews (Nebraska). Matthews' second home run of the season made the score 10-4 and put the Rox in control for good.
The Rox bats were hot all day long as eight of nine batters in the lineup recorded a hit. Matthews had three hits on Saturday, but Justin Kirby (Kent State) led the way at the plate with four hits on the afternoon.
The bullpen shut it down after the big inning with Andrew Morones (San Joaquin Delta) and Nathan Culley (Minnesota State-Mankato) combining for four-and-a-third shutout innings on the mound. Culley returned to the Rox after helping St. Cloud to the first-half championship in the Great Plains West.
The Rox' seven-game road trip comes to a close on Sunday against the Huskies, as St. Cloud looks to sweep the season series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm from Wade Stadium. St. Cloud returns home on Monday to face the Rochester Honkers in a two-game series.
