Brockton, Mass. - Pittsfield starter David Qualben threw a gem, limiting Brockton to no runs on three hits in seven innings of work, as the Colonials notched an 8-1 victory in Game 2 of the Can-Am League semifinals at Campanelli Stadium on Thursday evening. The Pittsfield win tied the best-of-five series at one game apiece.
Pittsfield scored its first run off of Brockton starter Mike Wlodarczyk in the second, on 3B Jason Taylor's solo blast to lead off the inning. The Colonials then tacked on another two runs in the third; the first came with SS Matt Nandin rapping a single, moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on 2B Danny Bomback's sacrifice fly, while Pittsfield made it a 3-1 game later in the inning on CF Daniel Carte's home run.
Colonials LF Rafael Cabreja and 1B Jerod Edmondson slammed another pair of solo home runs off of Wlodarczyk in the fourth, giving the visitors a 5-0 advantage.
In the seventh, Pittsfield added three more unearned runs off of reliever Francisco Ortiz; with runners at first and third, DH Donny Leon hit a pop-up that was dropped by Rox SS Dominic Ramos, allowing Bomback to score. Cabrera and C Scott Knazek then hit back-to-back singles, driving in another pair of runs to make the score 8-0, Colonials.
Brockton finally got on the board in the eighth, as 2B Scott Williams hit a solo homer to right.
Qualben (1-0) cruised to the victory, striking out five while walking just one. Wlodarczyk's (0-1) outing of three and one-third innings was shorter than any of his regular-season outings during the 2010 compaign.
Cabreja led the Pittsfield offense with a 3-for-5 evening; five other Colonials players had two hits each. Ramos was 2-for-3 on the Brockton scorecard, and made a superb defensive play to end the fourth inning, ranging to his right to scoop up a ground ball and throw out Bomback.
The two teams travel to the Berkshires on Friday, with Pittsfield hosting the Rox at 6:00 p.m. in Game Three. Brockton's Freddy Flores takes the mound against the Colonials' Kyle Zaleski.
