Round Rock Express News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - Taylor Teagarden homered twice, and Zach Jackson picked up his 12th win as the Round Rock Express edged the Omaha Storm Chasers 3-2 in Tuesday night's Pacific Coast League action at Werner Park. The Express (82-56) are three wins shy of matching the 2006 squad's franchise record. The Storm Chasers (77-60) reduced their magic number for winning the American Northern Division to two games despite the loss as Albuquerque won at Memphis 7-3.
Teagarden snapped a scoreless tie with a one-out solo homer to left-center in the top of the second. Guilder Rodriguez followed with a walk and later scored on Andres Blanco's two-out double. Omaha got a run back in the fourth on Yamaico Navarro's run-scoring fielder's choice. Teagarden pushed Round Rock's lead back to two runs with a two-out solo homer to right in the sixth inning.
It was Teagarden's second multiple-homer game of the season. He enjoyed a three-homer game against Iowa in April. It was the 17th time this season an Express player homered at least twice in a game.
Meanwhile, Jackson (12-5) kept Omaha off balance most of the night. He allowed two runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Jackson moved into a tie with Chris Sampson (2006) for most wins in a season in Express Triple-A history, one shy of Jason Hirsch's 2006 franchise record. Jackson got 12 groundouts against only one fly-ball out and pitched into the eighth inning for the first time since April 20.
Omaha made things interesting in the final two innings. Joaquin Arias doubled with one out in the eighth and later scored on David Lough's RBI groundout. Merkin Valdez spelled Jackson with two outs in the eighth and got Lorenzo Cain to ground out, stranding a runner at second. The Storm Chasers had one last chance as Irving Falu doubled with two outs in the ninth, but Valdez induced a game-ending groundout from Navarro.
Valdez recorded his eighth save of the season.
Storm Chasers starter Mike Montgomery (5-10) took the tough-luck loss. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk through 4.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Brad Nelson was 2-for-4, joining Teagarden in the multiple-hit column for the Express.
Lough, Falu and Arias all had two-hit nights for Omaha, combining to produce six of the Storm Chasers' nine hits.
Round Rock and Omaha continue their four-game series Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at Werner Park. Right-hander Eric Hurley (8-2, 4.76 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Express. All-PCL right-hander Luis Mendoza (11-5, 2.15 ERA) is slated to go for the Storm Chasers.
