Iowa Cubs News Release

Bryan LaHair's historic night was overshadowed as the Iowa Cubs (69-69) lost 7-3 to the Nashville Sounds (63-75) Tuesday night at Principal Park. In a pre-game ceremony, LaHair was honored as the I-Cubs' 2011 MVP and moved atop Iowa's all-time single-season home run list with a sixth inning blast.

Iowa got on the board early with an RBI-single by Lou Montanez, scoring Brett Jackson who had singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning. It would be the last time the Cubs enjoyed the lead in the game.

Nashville went ahead 3-1 in the top of the second inning on a bases-clearing double by Edwin Maysonet. The Cubs pulled to within one run of the Sounds when they loaded the bases in the home half of the third inning with one out but only managed to knock in one run on an infield single by DJ LeMahieu.

In the fifth, Martin Maldonado connected on a three-run home run with two outs to make the score 6-2. The next batter, Mat Gindl, then doubled and chased Iowa starter Nick Struck from the game. Struck (2-4) pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Leading off the Cubs' half of the sixth inning, Bryan LaHair connected on a solo homer into the right field bleachers. With his league-leading 38th home run of the season, LaHair has set a new Iowa single-season record, surpassing the mark Joe Hicks set in 1984. LaHair came close to accomplishing the feat in the first inning, but settled for a double off the right-center field wall.

The Sounds added their final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Erick Almonte in the eighth inning.

Nashville starter Josh Butler (9-7) completed five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out three.

The Cubs and Sounds play game three of this series tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. Jay Jackson (7-13, 5.57) will take the mound for Iowa opposite Mike Fiers (6-0, 1.42) for Nashville.
