
Castillo Returns to Disabled List

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Cubs' catcher Welington Castillo has been placed back on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Castillo spent two weeks on the DL with a similar injury, July 28-August 11, but rejoined the I-Cubs earlier this month after rehabbing in Mesa. In a corresponding move, Mario Mercedes has been called up by the Cubs from Boise.
Castillo, a mid-season PCL All-Star selection, set a career high of 15 home runs this season. In his second full season with Iowa, Castillo batted .286 with 35 RBI in 61 games. He put together a 15-game hitting-streak from May 30-June 8 which stands as a season high for the the team this year. Castillo also hit .154 (2-for-13) in four games with the Chicago Cubs this season.
Mercedes began the 2011 season with double-A Tennessee. He has also spent time with the Daytona Cubs, and joins Iowa today from the Boise Hawks. In 20 total games, Mercedes is batting .261 (17-for-65) with three doubles and five RBI. Chicago signed Mercedes as a 19-year old undrated free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2005. He is a career .264 hitter. This will be his first stint at the triple-A level.
