Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - October 23, 2018 - The Cedar Rapids Police Department and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders have teamed up to conquer bullying in local middle schools. The Police Department and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will roll out their new anti-bullying program "Every Goal Matters" on Wednesday, October 24th at 8:45 a.m. at LaSalle Middle School, 3700 1st Avenue NW, with a presentation to all 5th through 8th grade students.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. According to Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center, one out of every five students reports being bullied and more than half of bullying situations stop when a peer intervenes.
Several months ago, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders decided that they wanted to help address bullying in our community and contacted the Cedar Rapids Police Department to partner with a new, innovative program. Over the next few months, a student committee made up of middle school students from LaSalle and Prairie Point was formed. After gathering information and ideas from the student committee, the Police Department and RoughRiders representatives developed the "Every Goal Matters" program.
The "Every Goal Matters" program involves Cedar Rapids RoughRiders hockey players interacting with students and discussing ways to deal with bullying situations. The program concludes with RoughRiders Head Coach Mark Carlson providing a motivational speech. To request a presentation for your school, please contact Officer Shannon Sampson at 319-286-5434 or s.sampson@cedar-rapids.org or Tammy Carlson, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Community Outreach Director, at tcarlson@roughridershockey.com.
