RoughRiders shut out Springfield

April 10, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release

The RoughRiders (1-1) shut out the Cardinals (1-1) 10-0 Friday night as Frisco evened the series with Springfield and earned their first victory of 2009. Kasey Kiker (1-0) looked impressive in his Double-A debut, shutting out the Cardinals over five innings, striking out five and giving up just two hits. Offensively, Justin Smoak recorded his first home run at the Double-A level.

Frisco scored first with a pair of runs in the second frame when Steve Murphy blasted his first home run of the season with Adam Fox on base. The ‘Riders scored two more in the fourth inning to make the score 4-0 after a two-run single by Manny Pina with the bases loaded.

The ‘Riders broke the game open in the sixth inning, but in strange fashion as Frisco sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs, but without a single hit. Springfield walked seven RoughRiders and threw three wild pitches and when the dust settled, the ‘Riders improved their lead to 9-0. Smoak pushed the Frisco lead to double-digits, 10-0, with his first Double-A homer in the seventh inning.

Kiker went five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk and Justin Fiske (0-1) took the loss for Springfield. Out of the Frisco bullpen, Clayton Hamilton, Beau Jones, and John Bannister pitched a combined four scoreless innings to preserve the shutout.

Frisco will look to take the series Saturday afternoon at 2:10 in the finale. Like every RoughRiders' game in 2009, tomorrow's broadcast can be heard on 105.3 KRLD FM HD2.
