Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders forward Chad Costello has been named Let's Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week.
Costello, 19, earned the honor after scoring three goals and adding one assist as the Riders won back-to-back road games last weekend.
"Chad has done a great job for us this season and is certainly deserving of this honor," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "He shows a tremendous amount of determination on the ice along with a high skill level."
Costello scored the Riders' first two goals in a 4-3 overtime win over the Green Bay Gamblers last Friday. One night later, the Johnston, Iowa native, scored one of the Riders' five power play goals and assisted on the game winning goal in a 7-3 victory over the Indiana Ice.
On the season, Costello (14-21-35) is tied for second in the league in points and assists and is tied for eighth in goal scoring. The first year Rider has scored six goals in just his last seven games.
Costello was selected by the RoughRiders in the fifth round of the May, 2005 USHL draft with the forty-sixth overall choice after playing for the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the North American Hockey League last season. Costello finished the 2004-05 season tied for eighth in the NAHL in goals (29) and tied for ninth in points (34). He returned to the USHL this season after playing for the Des Moines Buccaneers two years ago. He is the first Iowa native to ever play for the RoughRiders.
Costello is the third RoughRider to earn USHL Player of the Week honors this season. Forward Ted Purcell took home the hardware last month and goaltender Al Stalock was recognized for his play on the opening weekend of the season.
Costello and the RoughRiders (18-7-1, 37 points) are currently in second place in the USHL's East Division, one point behind the Des Moines Buccaneers. Now in the midst of the league's annual holiday break, the Riders return to action on Thursday evening, December 29, when the Green Bay Gamblers visit Cedar Rapids for a 7:05 tilt.
