Roughnecks Use Turnovers to Defeat Dallas, 27-10
March 1, 2020 - XFL (XFL)
Houston Roughnecks News Release
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas Throwdown felt like a hoedown with how much the Houston Roughnecks were recording takeaways.
Forcing five turnovers made up for a quieter offensive day than usual, but Houston (4-0) held on to defeat the Dallas Renegades (2-2) 27-20 Sunday at Globe Life Park.
The Roughnecks defense recorded three interceptions and recovered two fumbles -- including one returned for a touchdown.
Dallas hung around until their final fourth-quarter drive. However, Landry Jones sustained an apparent injury to his left leg and had to be helped off the field. Philip Nelson took over, but Houston recovered a fumble near their own goal line to hang on and win by a touchdown.
ROUGHNECKS COMMENT ON WIN
"We talk about those takeaways all the time. Our defense just kept hanging in there. We needed to score more points when we had our chances with those takeaways, but it's a team game and did enough on each side of the ball to win and thats gonna be the start of a pretty good rivalry."
Roughnecks head coach June Jones
"I thought the defense played exceptional today. They carried us in. Offensively, we played decent and we gotta play next week moving into the next week. Just play our game."
Roughnecks QB P.J. Walker
STAT OF THE GAME
No surprise there.
PEAK PERFORMANCES
ROUGHNECKS
Robinson had the game-breaking strip-sack-scoop, but cornerback Deatrick Nichols registered two of the three early interceptions against Jones.
Though Dallas shut down Cam Phillips, Walker and Nick Holley took advantage. The RB/WR was a magnet, seeing 10 targets and catching eight for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Walker was quieter with his production but proved effective in finding what the defense gave him; Kahlil Lewis had 13 targets, and Blake Jackson contributed a score.
RENEGADES
Flynn Nagel converted a key three-point catch in the third quarter and caught six of seven targets for a team-high 76 yards.
The versatile Lance Dunbar added 65 scrimmage yards to his score. Dallas continued to rely on a sound run game, which may become more important if Jones misses time.
Renegades discuss defeat
"I so appreciate the great fans that were out there this afternoon. We had a great crowd, great environment and we got to get them a win. Hopefully they hang in there with us. ... Just looking at the game I find it amazing that with two minutes remaining we were on the three yard line with a chance to tie the game or take the lead." - Stoops
Renegades head coach Bob Stoops
"When you have an explosive player like that, it's about everyone really getting to the ball and for those secondary guys, it's about staying in your coverage longer because he can extend plays. Up front, we knew we had to disrupt him."
