Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Calgary, AB - Calgary Roughnecks will show their support for Canada's fighting men and women at Saturday's (March 31) home game with the Portland LumberJax.
In honour of our country's soldiers, sailors and airmen, the Riggers have labeled Saturday's game, "Military Appreciation Night.'
The tribute will begin prior to ball drop with a spectacular 'black light' display by the drum line of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment.
A military flag party, wearing swords, will then form a guard of honour while the anthems of the Canada and the United States of America are sung.
At half-time, a mock battle will be fought, complete with raiders rapelling from the Saddledome catwalk, a machine gun firing blanks from an armoured jeep, and an infantry section using 'fire' and movement to capture an enemy position.
The Military Family Resource Centre and army recruiters will have displays on the concourse.
"We wanted to do something to show how much we respect and appreciate those people who put their lives on the line for us," said Roughnecks General Manager, Kurt Silcott.
"As most people know, one of our stalwarts, Ryan McNish, is a helicopter technician in the armed forces, and he acts as a constant reminder of the importance we must attach to our country's military."
The drum line will perform around 7.15 p.m., with ball drop at 7.30 p.m.
