ODESSA, TX: The Odessa Roughnecks announced Thursday afternoon, March 19, during a press conference from Harrigan's Grill & Bar that starting quarterback Dennis Gile will return for his second season with the Roughnecks. Gile (6'2", 215 lbs.) is coming off a 2008 season in which he threw for 2,027 yards and registered 47 total touchdowns (41 passing, six rushing) in the former IFL (Intense Football League). Gile led the Roughnecks to a 7-7 regular season record including one playoff victory over the Frisco Thunder. Gile capped off his 2008 campaign with Odessa by being named to the 2008 IFL All-Star Team.
The Phoenix, Arizona native is a veteran of several professional football leagues including the NFL, CFL, AFL and AF2. Gile spent time with the Arizona Rattlers and the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League during the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
Gile was a two-year starter at Central Missouri State University ('01-'02) and compiled outstanding numbers for the Mules program. During those two seasons, Gile combined to throw for 4,741 yards and 40 touchdowns. He broke the school passing efficiency record with a rating of 214.0. Gile also ran for 285 yards and three touchdowns during those two seasons. He would go on to lead Central Missouri State to their best combined record in the program's history at 20-4.
"I"m very excited about returning to Odessa. I'm looking forward to picking up where we left off last season. We have a good core of guys coming back for this season and I believe we will be a very strong team once the season starts." explained Gile.
Following his career at Central Missouri State, Gile signed on as a free agent with the New England Patriots in 2003. Following his release during training camp with the Patriots, Gile went on to play two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League in 2003 and 2004.
"It's great to have Dennis back because he is a proven veteran that will make many great plays throughout the season. He has a great quarterback demeanor and he is definitely a leader on the field. I'm more than excited about working with him for another season." stated Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams.
