Roughnecks lose in Colorado
February 18, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Calgary Roughnecks News Release
A less than stellar second half performance saw the Calgary Roughnecks bow 12-15 to the Colorado Mammoth in Denver Sunday night.
Colorado now tops the National Lacrosse League's West Division with an 8-1 record, while the Riggers (4-3) drop to third. Arizona (5-2), by virtue of beating Edmonton Sunday afternoon sits alone in second spot.
The Roughnecks trailed by only one goal at the half (6-7), and at one stage in the third even led 9-8.
But once Jordan Cornfield - ironically an Edmontonian - knotted the scores, there was only one team in it.
It's not that Calgary did not have its opportunities. In what was a penalty-filled, high tempo, hard hitting game, they had numerous chances.
But for the second week in a row they came up against a spectacular goalie. Last Saturday, Matt Roik of Philadelphia, held the Riggers to a scant seven goals. Sunday it was Gee Nash who held the hot hand.
Several times he stood on his head when it appeared the Riggers just had to score.
"Once again we were guilty of poor shot selection," said Kurt Silcott, the Roughnecks General Manager. "We could have won this game, but our shooting was poor."
Silcott added, "It didn't help that we took dumb penalties at absolutely the worst times. We have to be smarter than that."
Andrew Leyshon, in the Calgary goal, had his moments, but was obviously shaken up after being run over late in the third quarter and was replaced towards the end of the game by young Ryan Avery.
Lewis Ratcliff with two goals and five helpers was again the Roughnecks main scorer. Skipper Tracey Kelusky chipped in five points (2g, 3a) and Kaleb Toth registered four (3g, 1a). One of Kelusky's markers was shorthanded which gives the club a league-leading 13 man down goals this year.
Dan Carey was the Mammoth's top marksman with seven points (3g, 4a). Three others got six points - Brian Langtry (2g, 4a), Gavin Prout (2g, 4a) and Jamie Shewchuk (3g, 3a).
Calgary's next game is next Friday at home to the always dangerous Toronto Rock (3-3). Twenty-fours later they play the same opponent, but this time in Toronto.
