DENVER - After three quarters of intense play, nine tie scores and 15 penalties, it appeared as though yet another chapter in the National Lacrosse League's fiercest rivalry wouldn't be decided until the final moments.

The Colorado Mammoth then scored four of the game's next five goals to beat the Calgary Roughnecks 15-12 in front of a boisterous crowd of 17,911 at Pepsi Center.

The Mammoth avenged its Jan. 20 loss in Calgary, mitigating the one blemish on its record, and improved its league-best record to 8-1. The Roughnecks fell to 4-3 and into third place behind Colorado and Arizona (5-2) in the West Division.

Dan Carey tallied a team-high seven points, including two goals in the deciding fourth-quarter outburst. Jamie Shewchuk added three late goals and Brian Langtry and Gavin Prout each scored two goals and added four assists.

"This team knows how to finish a game," Mammoth coach Gary Gait said. "We've been very good in the fourth quarter throughout much of this season and the guys came through again tonight."

Mammoth goaltender Gee Nash, who entered the game with an NLL-best .799 save percentage, was strong in net once again, stopping 35 of 47 shots to remain unbeaten in seven decisions this season.

Lewis Ratcliff led the Roughnecks with seven points on two goals and five assists and Kaleb Toth scored a team-high three goals. Goaltender Andrew Leyshon took the loss after making 37 saves on 52 shots.

Another hard-fought battle between the rival teams tightened as the game wore late into the third quarter, the defenses stiffened and special teams play became more critical. Toth tied the game at 10-10 with a power-play goal, but then Shewchuk got hot. The rookie Mammoth forward gave his team an 11-10 lead to take into the fourth quarter with a power-play marker of his own, and then added two more in the final period.

Mammoth defenseman Dave Stilley, a 10-year NLL veteran, scored twice in the game to bring his career total to six goals.

The Mammoth took a 5-4 lead into the second quarter and held a 7-6 halftime advantage after the teams traded goals.
