CALGARY- The Calgary Roughnecks selected seven new rookies from the 2010 NLL Entry Draft this afternoon. The Roughnecks added Curtis Dickson (first round, third overall), Dan MacRae (first round, sixth overall), Brandon Ivey (first round, eighth overall), Derek Hopcroft (second round, 17th overall), Jordan Sealock (fourth round, 32nd overall), Nic Bilic (fourth round, 39th overall), and Greg Hallett (fifth round, 49th overall).
In the first round alone the Roughnecks had three picks (third, sixth, and eighth) and used them wisely.
Dickson, the 22 year-old from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia was the Roughnecks first selection in the draft. The 6'2" offensive player had his first full year in the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) for the Maple Ridge Burrards. Dickson had 34 points (18g, 16a) during the 2010 regular season and notched an impressive 14 points (8g, 6a) against WLA champions the New West Salmonbellies in a five game series. Dickson also made the NLL Insider's Hot 50 as the number three pick.
MacRae is a lefty playing transition for the Brampton Excelsiors in the MSL this summer. MacRae is known as a strong and smart defenseman. During the 2010 regular season MacRae had four points (1g, 3a), while scooping up 2 loose balls. MacRae was rated eighth by the NLL Insider.
The Roughnecks eighth selection was Ivey another lefty, but this time on the offensive front. Ivey played with the Orangeville Northemen and tallied 60 points (35g, 25a) in the regular season and 20 points (9g, 11a) in playoffs. The Northmen were the 2008 and 2009 Minto Champions, and came in a close second to the Coquitlam Adanacs this year.
Calgary used their remaining four picks just as sensibly as their first three. Two of the last four picks included local Alberta talent.
Hopcroft was grabbed by the Roughnecks in the second round, which was lucky since he was ranked sixth in the Insiders Hot 50 picks. Hopcroft played in the MSL for the Brooklin Redmen and really stepped up his game after the departure of Shawn Williams. Hopcroft led his team with 55 points (21g, 34a), and also notched 30 points (13g, 17a) in the playoffs this year.
The first Alberta pick was Sealock (32nd overall), from Airdrie, AB who was originally drafted by the Riggers in 2006 from the Jr. A Raiders, but later offered a scholarship by Roger Morris University (RMU). Sealock was the Captain of the RMU Colonials and ended the season with 3 points (1g, 2a) and 19 loose balls.
The second last acquirement by the Roughnecks was Bilic from the Coquitlam Adanacs who is a strong defender. Bilic, from Burnaby, B.C. also added up a notable 15 goals during his 2010 regular season with the Adanacs. The Adanacs won the 2010 Minto Cup under the direction of Roughnecks Assistant Coach and Assistant GM, Curt Malawsky.
Hallett was selected last by the Riggers and was also the last out of the Albertacrop. Hallet is a goaltender for the Calgary Jr. A Raiders and is originally from Stettler, AB. The 6'3" goaltender was coached by Roughneck players Bruce Codd (Head Coach), Andrew McBride(Assistant Coach) and Mark Scherman (Assistant Coach). Hallett played 604 minutes in 2010 and had an 84.6 save percentage and went undefeated until the Minto tournament.
