
Roughnecks Drop Nail Biter To San Angelo, 44-35

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks held a nail biter against the San Angelo Stampede Express on Saturday evening, April 10, but a late 13-yard touchdown pass from QB Chad Draper to Chris McKinney with under two minutes remaining in the game sealed a 44-35 win for San Angelo over the Roughnecks.
San Angelo got off to a big start as WR Mike Malone returned the opening kickoff back 46-yards for a 6-0 lead. The Roughnecks countered with two touchdowns to make it 13-6 when Tommy Jones connected on two touchdown passes to Ryan Bugg from eight and 16-yards out.
San Angelo answered the call as they took a 19-13 lead when Brannon Hatley posted a two-yard touchdown run and Derrick Ross added a one-yard touchdown run. San Angelo led at halftime 19-13.
The Roughnecks came out on fire in the second half as Tommy Jones connected with Ryan Bugg for a 31-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 20-19 lead. San Angelo countered with a Derrick Ross rushing touchdown to make it 26-20, but Tommy Jones answered the call through the air as he found Steve Bergeski for a 33-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 27 following a recorded rouge by the Stampede Express.
The Roughnecks took a two point lead when Jermaine Blakely blocked a San Angelo field goal attempt out of the field of play to make it 29-27. However, the Stampede Express received another score on the ground from Derrick Ross making it 34-29.
Roughnecks running DeWayne Hogan posted a crucial one-yard touchdown run to give the Roughnecks a 35-34 lead with under five minutes remaining in the game.
However, San Angelo QB Chad Draper connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass to WR Chris McKinney with 1:48 left to give San Angelo a 42-35 lead. San Angelo would cap off the win by recording a safety to seal the win at 44-35.
The Roughnecks fall to 1-4 on the season as San Angelo improves to 4-1. The Roughnecks will host the Austin Turfcats next Saturday, April 17 as the Stampede Express host the Arkansas Diamonds on Saturday, April 17.
