Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Venom continued their undefeated season with a 51-40 win over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads Saturday night.
Corpus Christi capitalized on fabulous field position on their first possession of the game, ending with quarterback Wesley Cooper sneaking into the endzone on a one-yard rushing score. In his first game since March 13th, running back Sha-Ron Edwards earned his first of two first-half scores on Amarillo's opening possession (5-yard rush). After the Venom forced the Hammerheads to a three-and-out, running back Dontrell Moore cashed in from one yard away, giving Amarillo the 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter end of the first.
Hammerheads wide receiver/running back Justin Hardman starred in the second frame, totaling 4 touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 receiving). After Amarillo added two rushing scores, Hardman collected his lone receiving catch. Before the first half ended, Venom wideout DuVaughn Flagler made a 15-yard touchdown reception, giving Julian Reese his first passing touchdown of the night. The score at the half, Amarillo 33 Corpus Christi 33.
The defense set the tone in the third quarter, as both teams registered fourth-down stops. Amarillo collected the only scoring in the frame, when wideout Alex Watson caught a 27-yard reception with 45.0 seconds left in the quarter. After a missed two-point conversion, Amarillo led 39-33.
The Venom outscored the Hammerheads in the final quarter of play 12-7. Quarterback Julian Reese threw two touchdowns passes for scores (to DuVaughn Flagler and Alex Watson). In Corpus Christi's final drive of the ballgame, the Venom defense stood tall, halting the Hammerheads offense from the 4 yard line on fourth down to end the game with the 51-40 victory.
The Venom remain the lone undefeated team in the Intense Conference...With two receiving touchdowns, wideout DuVaughn Flagler continues to lead the Venom in touchdowns with 8...Defensive back Cedric Wilson earned the contest's "Defensive Player of the Game" award.
