Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Edmonton, AB-The Calgary Roughnecks defeated the Edmonton Rush 15-14 in overtime at Rexall Place on Friday. The win improves the Roughnecks' record to 9-6 while the Rush fell to 9-6 on the season.
The Rush opened the scoring with a powerplay goal by Corey Small 3:56 in. Edmonton extended their lead to two with an even strength goal before the Riggers replied with two of their own to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
Josh Sanderson would give the Roughnecks their first lead of the game 18 seconds into the second quarter on the powerplay. Just over a minute later, Dane Dobbie extended Calgary's lead to two after Rush goaltender Matt Disher lost sight of the ball and Dobbie scored on a gaping cage.
The Rush pulled back to within one before a five minute major to Mike Kilby for high-sticking led to two quick powerplay goals by Edmonton to regain the lead for the Rush. Sixteen seconds after the Rush gained the lead, the Riggers would tie it back up on a scramble that saw two rebounds before Curtis Manning would put the ball in the net.
Less than half a minute later the Rush would regain the lead thanks to Small. The Rush would increase the lead to two before the Roughnecks, with goals from Dobbie, Kaleb Toth and Craig Conn, would regain the lead for themselves.
With only 12 seconds left in the half, a powerplay goal by Small would tie the game up at 8-8 heading into halftime.
The third quarter began in much the same way as the first. The Rush scored two goals before the five minute mark, and the Roughnecks replied with two of their own. A powerplay goal from Ryan Powell at the 12:32 mark would give the Rush an 11-10 lead that would hold up heading into the fourth quarter.
2:49 into the final frame the âNecks would once again tie up the score as Dobbie would find Tracey Kelusky for a one-timer on the powerplay. The Rush would regain the lead less than a minute later on a goal from Gavin Prout. Brodie Merrill would extend the lead with a breakaway goal at the 5:25 mark.
With the Rush up by two, Toth would start another flurry of scoring with a rocket from the point that beat Disher high on the wide side. On the next possession, Sanderson would use his speed to get wide on the Rush defense, cut to the net and tie the game up again. The tie was short-lived, as six seconds after the Sanderson goal, Merrill would give Edmonton its seventh lead of the game.
With just over three minutes left in the game, Mike Carnagie would take the ball the length of the floor and tie the game at 14-14. The Roughnecks would go on the powerplay at 12:55 of the final frame. Despite having the powerplay, the âNecks couldn't do anything offensively and the tie would stand to the end of regulation.
On the Riggers' first possession and shot of overtime, Sanderson would end the game as the hero.
Matt King started the game in net for the Riggers, but was pulled in favor of Mike Poulin with just under five minutes left in the first half. King, who didn't appear to be injured, had played well up to that point.
The Roughnecks, who secured a playoff berth with a 12-11 win over the Colorado Mammoth last weekend, can secure a home playoff game with an Edmonton loss in Washington tomorrow night.
The Roughnecks take on the Mammoth again next Friday at the Pepsi Centre in Denver for their last regular season game. The game starts at 7 p.m. MST.
