Philadelphia Wings News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The Philadelphia Wings (5-10) overcame a three-goal fourth quarter Minnesota Swarm (5-10) lead to force overtime. Wings Assistant Captain Geoff Snider gave Philadelphia the win with a goal just over three minutes into overtime. Snider led the Wings in scoring on the night with seven points (4G, 3A) and goaltender Brandon Miller was able to stop 44 of 56 shots on goal by the Swarm.
The Wings started the game with three straight goals from three separate players to get an early advantage, but Minnesota responded with a trio of goals of their own to even the score at the end of the first quarter. The Swarm carried their momentum into the second quarter, as they found a way to net five goals on Philadelphia in the period. The Wings struggled to keep up with just two scores in the quarter and trailed at halftime 8-5.
The third quarter was a defensive battle with each team getting just two goals. Miller, nine saves, and Minnesota goalie Nick Patterson, 10 saves, were both fantastic in the quarter. Philadelphia was able to make its dramatic comeback in the fourth quarter. Team leading scorer Drew Westervelt and Lower Merion native John Christmas got the Wings out of the gate early in the fourth scoring goals in the first two minutes of the final quarter. The Swarm responded with a goal from Ryan Benesch, which was answered by Snider with five minutes to play, but still Philadelphia found itself down one with under a minute to play. Wings forward Kyle Wailes stepped up for his team and was able beat Patterson to even the score at 12 to force overtime. A back and forth overtime ended when Snider's MVP performance concluded by getting the game winning tally just over three minutes into the extra period to giving his team the road win.
