Roughnecks Bounce Back With 13-8 Win Over Rush

CALGARY, AB- The Calgary Roughnecks rebounded in a big way with a 13-8 win over the Edmonton Rush in front of 10,724 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Friday night.
Following a 14-11 loss in Edmonton last Saturday night, the Roughnecks (2-3) exacted a measure of revenge against their northern foes in Round 2 of the Battle of Alberta.
Josh Sanderson led the way for the Riggers with a hat trick and three helpers as Calgary ended its three-game losing streak with an exclamation point.
Scott Ranger and Tracey Kelusky had strong offensive showings with two goals and three assists each, while Jeff Shattler notched two goals and two helpers. Dane Dobbie scored once and set up four others, Conn counted a goal and an assist, while Mike Carnegie and Curtis Manning added singles.
Goalie Matt King stopped 33 of 41 shots he faced in the Calgary net to record the victory.
Gavin Prout had two goals and three assists for the Rush (3-2) as Edmonton's franchise-best winning streak ended at three games. Ryan Powell (2g, 1a), Ryan Ward (2g), Dean Hill (1g, 2a), Scott Stewart (1g, 1a) and Brodie Merrill (3a) also hit the score sheet for the Rush.
After stopping 45 shots to lead Edmonton to victory last weekend over Calgary, Rush goalie Matt Disher made 40 saves in a losing cause on Friday night.
The Roughnecks opened the scoring in the first quarter when Kelusky's shot from long range found its way past Disher. A short time later, Sanderson converted a feed from Dobbie during a Calgary man advantage to put the 'Necks up 2-0.
Ranger continued the early onslaught when he cut his way through traffic to the front of the net and faked a low shot before wiring a shot into the net over Disher's right shoulder. Powell then scored back-to-back goals 89 seconds apart to pull the Rush within a goal before the end of the opening frame.
At 3:33 of the second quarter, Ranger picked up his own rebound and scored to put the Riggers up 4-2.
With Edmonton's Brett Mydske in the penalty box serving a major penalty for checking from behind, Sanderson converted a feed from Kelusky to give Calgary a three-goal advantage.
Kelusky then counted his second of the game with the Roughnecks killing a two-man disadvantage before Shattler scored on a no-look, behind-the-back shot from the slot while Calgary was still a man down.
Conn then finished off a dominating first-half performance for the Riggers when he picked up a rebound and deposited a backhand shot into the net behind Disher while falling to the floor.
Early in the second half, Shattler took a feed from Kelusky and fired his second goal of the game and 50th of his career. Stewart and Hill then replied with goals for Edmonton as Calgary took a 9-4 lead into the final frame.
Following a shorthanded goal by Ward for the Rush, Sanderson completed his hat trick before Mike Carnegie made good on a breakaway attempt to count his first goal of the season.
Ward then scored again for Edmonton before Dobbie added an insurance goal for the Riggers to go with his four helpers. Prout scored a pair of late goals for Edmonton, while Manning replied with another for Calgary.
The same two teams will settle the season series with a rubber match in Edmonton on Friday, April 16.
