Rosscup Joins Smokies on MLB Rehab Assignment
July 21, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK - The Chicago Cubs announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies roster prior to this evening's doubleheader against the Birmingham Barons at Smokies Stadium.
Cubs left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup has joined the Smokies on a Major League Rehab Assignment as he recovers from left shoulder inflammation. Prior to his injury, the 27-year-old compiled a 2-1 record and 4.30 ERA (11 ER in 23.0 IP), adding 25 strikeouts in 26 appearances with the Cubs.
The southpaw has pitched in parts of each of the last three seasons with Chicago, tallying a 3-1 clip and 5.44 ERA (26 ER in 43.0 IP) along with 13 games finished and 53 punchouts since making his Major League debut on September 3, 2013. The Oregon native has previously pitched for the Smokies during the 2012 and 2013 campaigns, combining for a 2-2 mark and 3.29 ERA (24 ER in 65.2 IP) in 48 outings, adding 95 strikeouts.
The lefty was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 28th round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Chemeketa Community College in Oregon. Rosscup would later be acquired by the Cubs in a January 9, 2011 trade from Tampa along with pitcher Matt Garza and outfielder Fernando Perez in exchange for four Smokies alums in pitcher Chris Archer, catcher Robinson Chirinos and outfielders Sam Fuld and Brandon Guyer, along with infielder Hak-Ju Lee.
Rosscup becomes the seventh Cubs player to join the Smokies on a Major League Rehab Assignment this season. Pitchers Jacob Turner, Neil Ramirez and Tsuyoshi Wada, as well as infielders Tommy La Stella and Mike Olt, and outfielder Chris Denorfia have all participated in a game with the club this season recovering from an injury.
Tennessee's roster now stands at 25 active players, in addition to four players on the Disabled List and Rosscup on his Major League Rehab Assignment, and a revised roster is attached.
The Smokies are set to face off against the Birmingham Barons in a doubleheader this evening, with game one scheduled to begin at 5:35 p.m. Tennessee is anticipated to give the nod to RHP Felix Pena (5-6, 4.17), who ranks fifth in the league in strikeouts, in game one, while Birmingham is slated to counter with the Southern League leader in wins in RHP Myles Jaye (9-3, 2.28). RHP Ivan Pineyro (5-5, 4.15) is expected to toe the rubber for the Smokies in game two, while the Barons are set to send RHP Tyler Danish (7-5, 4.30) to the hill.
Both games are scheduled to last seven innings, with game two beginning approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest. Tickets for tonight's originally scheduled matchup will be good for both tilts, with gates opening at 4:30 p.m.
Tickets for tonight and all remaining home contests at Smokies Stadium are on sale and can be purchased online at smokiesbaseball.com, or by calling the Smokies Ticket Office at 865-286-2300.
