Potomac Nationals News Release
(WILMINGTON, DE) Monday's matchup in Wilmington, Delaware figured to showcase one of the best lefthanders in minor league baseball - and it delivered. But it was Danny Rosenbaum - not Wilmington's John Lamb - who stole the show and announced himself to the Carolina League with his second win in as many starts. Rosenbaum dominated the Blue Rocks over eight shutout innings, and got more than enough run support from the red-hot Potomac offense in a 10-1 blowout that pushed the P-Nats into a tied for first place in the second half standings.
The Nats sent Rosenbaum to the hill with a lead in the bottom of the first. Derek Norris singled with one out in the top of the opening inning and moved to second on Lamb's throwing error. He came into score when Tyler Moore, the Carolina League Player of the Week two weeks running, singled to center for his league-leading 73rd RBI.
Rosenbaum, who faced three more than the minimum through seven innings, and required just 88 pitches to sail through eight frames, got more support in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
Steve Lombardozzi led off the third with a triple to left, and scored when Will Ortiz singled to center field.
The Nats chased Lamb after four innings, his shortest start of the season. James Thompson ran into trouble in the sixth. Three straight hits to open the inning, including a double by Sean Rooney, scored a run and put runners at first and second. Nick Moresi then bunted Robbie Jacobsen and Bill Rhinehart to second and third. The newest National Francisco Soriano belted a sacrifice fly to right field that made it 4-0, and Lombardozzi singled on the infield to stretch the lead to five.
Potomac put the game out of reach with in the seventh. With one out, Moore and Rooney singled, and Thompson walked Jacobsen to load the bases for Bill Rhinehart. Rhinehart then hit a mammoth grand slam out of the stadium to right field, and Potomac was out in front 9-0.
They added their tenth run in the ninth inning on another Soriano sac fly that scored Rhinehart, who was on base three times.
Rosenbaum faced his biggest jam in the eighth. His string of twelve batters retired was snapped by a one-out single by Rene Oriental and a double by Adam Frost. With runners at second and third, Patrick Norris blooped out to third and Christian Colon flied out to right to preserve the shutout.
The Rocks' lone run scored on a passed ball with two outs in the ninth.
With the win, the Nats moved to five games over .500 in a half for the first time all year, extended their winning streak to three and tied the Blue Rocks for first in the second half standings.
Trevor Holder takes the mound tomorrow against another Blue Rocks southpaw Danny Duffy at 7:05 P.M. The broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:50.
