Mississippi Braves News Release

Mississippi pounded out five hits and seven runs in the first inning capped off by Michael Rosamond's grandslam to take control of the game from the outset. Paul Bush was brilliant for five innings allowing only two solo homers through his six innings pitched. Bush improved to 3-3 on the year as the Braves downed the Barons for the first time in this series, 8-2.

For the second time in this series, Mississippi exploded in the first inning. Gregor Blanco drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a groundout by Luis Hernandez. He stole third and, after a Yunel Escobar single, scored on a single by Barbaro Canizares. Matt Esquivel then singled in Escobar, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked to load the bases. Michael Rosamond followed with the second grand slam in Mississippi Braves history to make the score 6-0. Josh Burrus then doubled and scored on a double by Gregor Blanco to make the score 7-0 after one.

The Braves added another run in the third when Josh Arteaga belted his third homer of the year over the left field wall.

Birmingham got on the board in the sixth when Darren Blakely and Ricardo Nanita hit back-to-back homers making the score 8-2.

Braves' starter Paul Bush (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2, R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 2 HR, 1 WP) was outstanding with the exception of the two homers he gave up. He improved to 3-3. Ryan Basner (2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K) gave up a leadoff single then retired the next six batters he faced through two scoreless innings. Zach Schreiber (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Barons' starter Corwin Malone (3.0 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 5 BB, 2 HR) left the game after three innings trailing 8-0 and fell to 4-4 on the year. BJ Lamura (2.0 IP, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 BK) threw two shutout innings. Dwayne Pollock (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) threw one scoreless inning. Brian West (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) threw one scoreless inning. Ehren Wasserman (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) threw one scoreless inning.

Mississippi takes on Birmingham in the fifth and final game of this series tomorrow night at Trustmark Park. Mississippi sends righty Matt Wright to the hill in search of his third win of '06 while Birmingham counters with lefty Ryan Rodriguez who's going for win number two on the year.
