Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters won consecutive games for the first time this season by defeating the Chillicothe Paints 3-2 on Sunday. The win also marked the first against the Paints after Chillicothe completed a sweep at McBride Stadium in the season opening games.
Richmond got an excellent performance from starter Richard Barkley for the third time this season. Barkley pitched eight strong innings and allowed only two runs and three hits. Barkley was cruising along for much of the game as he struck out ten Chillicothe batters. Chad Sosebee pitched the ninth inning as he made his ninth relief appearance of the year. Sosebee (3-1) got the win after retiring the Paints in order.
The Roosters fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first after Chillicothe got a two out walk and a hit batter. Beau Blacken smacked an RBI double to right to score Adam Shorts. The Roosters quickly responded with a leadoff hit by Mike Reese. After Justin Hancock's sacrifice bunt, Trevor Hall hit a double to left to tie the game at 1-1. Kevin Brown then followed with a single to score Hall and make it 2-1 in favor of Richmond.
The Paints tied the game in the top of the sixth on back to back hits by Tony Cosentino and Beau Blacken, but with the score still even at 2-2, the Roosters came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. With one out and nobody on base, Jose Sandoval Jr. doubled to right. The after Mike Croley lined out, Chillicothe decided to intentionally walk Mike Barclay and pitch to Justin Hancock. Hancock took a pitch to right field and Paints right fielder Eric Goerdt could not get the ball to the plate in time to keep Jose Sandoval Jr. from scoring from second. Sandoval crossed the plate and was joined by his teammates out of the dugout to celebrate the victory. "I think we are starting to put things together on this team," said Justin Hancock after his game-winning hit, "we have a good team."
The Roosters (6-10) are now 3-1 on the current home stand and will try to get a third consecutive win as they take on the Chillicothe Paints (8-6) in the second game of the three game series. Josh Neitz (0-3) will start for the Roosters as he makes his fourth start of the season to go along with four relief outings. Dave Gordon is scheduled to start for Chillicothe. Game time is set for 6:35pm at McBride Stadium.
