Roosters Sweep Kings in First Home Series of 2003

June 3, 2003 - Frontier League (FL)
Richmond Roosters News Release

Fans of the Richmond Roosters were not disappointed as they watched their team sweep the Kalamazoo Kings in a three game series this past weekend. The Roosters, who started the season with six straight road games, seemed to enjoy the comforts of home as they outscored the Kings 19-8 overall. The series featured a t-shirt giveaway sponsored by U.S. Bank on Saturday (5-31-03) night and the magnetic schedule giveaway sponsored by Rhinehart’s Lawncare at Sunday’s double-header.

Last season’s Frontier League champion Roosters were honored before the opening night game as league commissioner Bill Lee helped unveil the 2002 championship banner. The ceremony allowed the near sell-out crowd to share in the festivities with the 2002 club members, while reminding this year’s players and coaches that the goal is 2003 is another championship, as they kick off the home schedule.

Despite overcast skies and temperatures that dipped well below fifty, the fifth largest opening day crowd in Rooster history, was able to watch as Chris Spigner (2-0) struck out eleven Kings while not giving up any runs in seven plus innings of work. The Roosters won the game by the final score of 3-0. Following the game, fans were treated to an impressive fireworks extravaganza.

Rookie centerfielder and lead-off hitter Rory Thornton led the Roosters to a 7-6 extra inning victory in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, as he went three for four at the plate and scored three runs. Thornton led off the eighth with a single and scored three batters later on a shot off the wall by DH Drew Miller. Mike Henry (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up his first win of the season.

The second half of the doubleheader Sunday was not as much of a nail biter as the first one, thanks to impressive hitting by rookie designated hitter Tom Pearce. Pearce accounted for three hits and five RBIs, including a grand slam home run in the third inning that put the Roosters ahead to stay. Fans were elated when Jeremiah Klosterman homered in the sixth inning, scoring the final two runs of the game, making the final score 9-2.

The sweep extended the Roosters winning streak to four games and brought their record to 6-3 on the season. The team has an off day on Monday before the Chillicothe Paints make their way to McBride Stadium at 6:35 pm on Tuesday (6-3-03). The series will feature a player autograph photo of Jeremiah Klosterman sponsored by Jeff Pohlman Tire and Auto Center on Tuesday, a Johnsonville Buck-A-Brat night on Wednesday and closes the home stand on Thursday with the Richmond-Wayne County Chamber night at the park.

Tickets are available at the box office at McBride Stadium, Side 1 Music or by calling 765-935-7529.
