Roosters Streak Stretches To Seven

Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters had not won more than two consecutive games until the current stretch of games. Richmond defeated the Kalamazoo Kings 7-5 on Wednesday at McBride Stadium to push the current win streak to seven and put the Roosters in fourth place in the Frontier League Eastern Division. The win over the Kings in the fourth straight after losing the first five meeting against Kalamazoo.

The Roosters scored first with a run by Trevor Hall in the second inning. Hall would score on the sacrifice fly by Tony Sanguinetti that came two batters later. Hall walked all four times at bat on Wednesday. The Roosters 1-0 lead was short lived however as Kalamazoo answered with three runs in the top of the third highlighted by Fehlandt Lentini's two run homer to left. The Kings would lead 3-1 until Kevin Brown got the Roosters started with a solo shot to lead off the sixth. Brown's eleventh homer of the year was such a towering shot that it completely left McBride Stadium and cleared the street. Brown's blast was followed by a single from Drew Miller and Miller later scored to tie the game at 3-3. The Roosters won the game in the seventh. After a Kings run in the top of the inning, the Roosters got four runs scored as Blake Woods walked, Brown singled, Drew Miller reached on a fielder's choice and Trevor Hall walked and each one later crossed the plate. a RBI hit by Josh Hollingsworth and a 2 RBI knock by Sanguinetti allowed Richmond to go ahead 7-4. Kalamazoo got a run back in the ninth, but it was not enough to avoid the sweep.

Chad Sosebee (5-1) picked up another win in relief as he pitched 1 2/3 innings. Sosebee hold the lowest ERA in the Frontier League and once again did not allow the opposition to score. Curt Moenter started for the Roosters and went six innings and allowed three runs, but only one was earned. Moenter had much better control than previous starts as he struck out three and walked only two. Ryan West and Dave Campos each faced one batter and Matt Schweitzer threw in the ninth to get his second save of the year.

Kalamazoo had their ace on the mound as David McWatters lasted five innings. He gave up three runs and five hits and did not get a decision. Brian Beuning (0-2) lost the game in relief after pitching just 2/3 of an inning. Justin Keeling and Michael Leishman each lasted 2/3 of an inning and Mike Musialowski pitched the eighth against the red-hot Richmond bats. The Roosters scored a total of 66 runs during the home stand and the seven runs on Wednesday was the lowest offensive output of the six games. The other Roosters totals ranged from nine to sixteen runs each night.

The Roosters (17-21) have now passed the Chillicothe Paints for fourth place in the Frontier League Eastern Division. Richmond will try to extend the seven game win streak as they begin a very important series in Evansville against the first place Otters. It will mark the first trip to Evansville for the Roosters this season. Sean Donlin (1-0, 1.80 ERA) gets the start for the Roosters and Scott Barber 3-2, 5.26 ERA) will take the mound for Evansville. The Roosters are now 8 1/2 games behind the Otters in the division. Game time is set for 7:05pm in Evansville.
