Richmond Roosters News Release

Richmond, Indiana - A season high crowd of 2,378 fans watched the Roosters lose 6-2 to the Washington Wild Things on Independence Day at McBride Stadium. The Roosters had hoped to gain ground on the first place team in the Eastern Division, but Washington pitcher Matt McDonnell kept that from happening. McDonnell and two other pitcher combined to beat Richmond.

Each team scored in their first and last inning at the plate, but neither team scored in between. The Wild Things produced two runs in the first and Richmond responded with one. Blake Woods scored after a walk. Woods was knocked in by Kevin Brown's single to center to make it 2-1 Washington. The Wild Things blew the game open in the ninth with four runs on Roosters pitcher Chad Sosebee to take a 6-1 advantage. The Roosters got one run back on a lead off solo homer by Kevin Brown in the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome Washington. The Wild Things have now beaten Richmond in the last three meetings and four of six times this season.

Richard Barkley (4-3) picked up a loss after allowing two runs in the opening inning. Barkley shut down the Wild Things for the rest of his six inning, but never got the run support to take the lead. Matt Schweitzer pitched two scoreless innings and Chad Sosebee threw the four run ninth. Matt McDonnell (5-2) lasted six innings and gave up just one run. Brendon Davis came in for the seventh and eighth with B.J. Borsa pitching the ninth. Kevin Brown's homer in the ninth was the second off of Borsa this season.

The Roosters (18-24) look to even the series on Monday night. Richmond has now lost three of the last four games after winning seven straight. Curt Moenter (2-2, 4.86 ERA) will take the mound for the Roosters and will oppose Ryan Ewin (3-1, 4.50 ERA) for Washington. Game time is set for 6:35pm at McBride Stadium for Meijer Monday. Fans showing a Meijer Credit Card will receive two tickets for the price of one.
