Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers have added three talented rookies to their spring training roster for the 2009 Inaugural Season. Levi Cheshire (INF), Wayne Bond (OF), and Adam Matos (OF) join the Crushers after successful collegiate careers and are expected by Field Manager John Massarelli to challenge the more experienced players for Opening Day roster spots this spring.

Cheshire recently finished his collegiate baseball career at Madonna University. His senior season, he hit .303 in 50 games played. He led his team in on-base percentage (.495), runs (47), triples (4), walks (38) and sacrifice bunts.

According to Massarelli, "Levi is an athletic middle infielder with solid tools. He will compete for a utility spot this spring."

Bond played his junior and senior season at Ball State University. In 2007, he led his team in hits (64), runs (38), stolen bases (15), and multiple hit games (18). In his senior season, he hit .327 and scored 52 runs in 52 games played. He also led the team in home runs (14), RBI (55), hits (69), hit-by-pitches (14) and stolen bases (14).

"Bond is an athletic outfielder who can run, throw and hit," says Massarelli. "Size may have gotten him overlooked by Major League scouts. He has a great opportunity to prove scouts wrong this summer in Avon."

Matos joins the Crushers after a strong senior season at the University of West Georgia. In his final season, he led the team with a blazing .400 batting average. In 47 games played, he scored 42 runs and collected 60 hits, 4 triples, 4 home runs, 33 RBI, 14 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Massarelli says, "Matos had a solid senior season in college. He will need to take that same approach to the pro level."

The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team will open its Inaugural Season on June 2, 2009 at All Pro Freight Stadium, the new 5,000 capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611 in Avon.
