Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
EL PASO, Texas - Ari Ronick threw a gem on Friday night, holding El Paso to one run in seven innings as the RailCats took the series opener from the Diablos by a score of 6-3. The RailCats (9-5) remain tied for first place in the American Association Central with Wichita. They have now won all five of their series openers this season.
The RailCats grabbed the lead in the first inning thanks to sloppy defense from El Paso. Adam Klein led off with an infield hit and stole second. Mike Massaro then reached on a two-base error on the first baseman, allowing Klein to score. Massaro moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a grounder by Cristian Guerrero, with Guerrero reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman.
El Paso pulled a run back in the first on a two-out solo homer by Brian Joynt.
That would be the only run allowed by Ronick (2-1), as he pitched seven superb innings, scattering six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Over his last two starts, Ronick has given up just two runs in 13 frames.
Diablos pitcher Ryan Bean (0-2) took the tough luck loss, as he allowed two runs, one earned in five innings before turning it over to the bullpen. In the sixth, Drew Martinez and Zac Mitchell hit back-to-back singles, and Chase Tucker brought Martinez home with a groundout. Massaro added a two-out RBI single to give the RailCats a 4-1 lead.
Gary came back for more in the seventh, scoring on Brian Kolb's RBI single and a sac fly by Martinez to stretch the lead to 6-1.
El Paso scored a run in the eighth on an RBI double by Jonathan Cisneros against reliever Ian Durham. They tacked on an unearned run in the ninth against Marco Gonzalez on a run-scoring single by Michael Gonzalez. Kolb and Massaro each had a pair of hits for the RailCats while Klein delivered his second three-hit game of the season.
The series continues Saturday night at 8:05 Central Time. Right-hander Stephen Hiscock (0-1, 3.94) will pitch for the RailCats against El Paso righty David Casillas.
