Wingnuts Grind out Win at Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts (9-5) won their fourth game in a row on Friday night, beating the Sioux Falls Canaries (5-10) 5-4 at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Jake Kahaulelio's two-out, infield single in the top of the ninth inning broke a 4-4 tie and gave Wichita their fourth lead of the game. Jared McDonald doubled to left-center with one out and took third on a wild pitch before Kahaulelio ripped the ball fair behind the third base bag. Sioux Falls' Tim Pahuta made a diving stop to his right, but Kahaulelio beat the ensuing throw to first base.

Josh Dew worked around a single and a stolen base in the bottom of the ninth to notch his second save of the year. Dew struck out John Alonso looking to end the game, stranding the tying run on second base.

Lincoln Holdzkom earned the win in relief for Wichita after throwing a perfect bottom of the eighth.

Kirk Clark took the loss for the Canaries, allowing one earned run in one and one-third innings.

Sioux Falls scored the first run of the game on a Jared Clark RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the first. The Canaries drew four walks in the inning, but Wingnuts' starter Junior Guerra limited them to the lone run.

Cole Armstrong tied the game in the top of the second with a one-out, solo home run to left field.

Wichita went in front 2-1 in the top of the fourth. John Rodriguez doubled to left-center leading off, which extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Rodriguez went to third on C.J. Ziegler's line drive single to left. Two batters later, Abel Nieves drove in Rodriguez with a groundout to second base. Nick Van Stratten tied the game for the Canaries with a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the inning.

Kahaulelio delivered a two-out RBI single to center in the top of the fifth that scored McDonald, and made it 3-2 Wichita. Sioux Falls knotted the score in the bottom half on a solo home run to left-center from Alonso.

The Wingnuts took their third lead in the sixth. With runners on first and second and two outs, David Amberson legged out an infield single on a groundball to second. Jake Taylor's throw to first went beyond the reach of Canaries' starter Ben Moore who was covering the bag. The error allowed Armstrong to score from second with the Wingnuts' fourth run.

Sioux Falls answered again in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and no one on base, Cory Morales singled to left, stole second, and scored on a J.P. Ramirez groundball single to center.

Guerra took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in five innings. Guerra walked six and struck out five.

Moore also took a no-decision, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits in five and two-thirds innings. Moore walked one and struck out seven. It was Moore's first walk of the season in 27 and two-thirds frames.

Kahaulelio finished with three hits for the Wingnuts and has hit safely in six in a row.
