Rogers, Early Offense Carry Giants to 4-0 Win

MODESTO - Taylor Rogers tossed seven scoreless innings and the San Jose Giants used an early offensive outburst to earn a 4-0 shutout victory over the Modesto Nuts on Thursday evening at John Thurman Field. San Jose scored three times in the top of the first inning before an out was recorded on the way to snapping their six-game losing streak.

Rogers (7-7) surrendered only three singles during his stint on the mound to pick-up the victory. The right-hander, who retired the first 13 batters that he faced, walked none and struck out eight. Chris Wilson (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) and Jose Valdez (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) then each worked a scoreless inning of relief to complete the shutout.

Carter Jurica (2-for-5, 2B, 3B) doubled and tripled while Ricky Oropesa (1-for-4, 2 RBI) had a key two-run single to lead the Giants offensively.

San Jose wasted no time against Nuts starter Leuris Gomez as the game began with four consecutive hits. Jurica led off by hammering a fly ball off the fence in left for a triple and then immediately scored when the next batter, Joe Panik, singled sharply up the middle. Adam Duvall followed with a double advancing Panik to third and then Oropesa brought home both runners with a bloop single into shallow left center field. The Giants enjoyed a 3-0 lead just four batters into the game.

Rogers breezed through the first four innings as he set down Modesto 1-2-3 in each frame. Rogers did not go to a three-ball count on a hitter until facing Kyle Parker to begin the top of the fifth. The San Jose starter fanned Parker for the first out, but then Juan Crousset grounded a single into left for the first Nuts baserunner of the contest. With two outs in the inning, Jayson Langfels singled to put runners on first and second, however Rogers recovered to strikeout Dustin Garneau to end the threat.

The Giants extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth as three consecutive singles from Andrew Susac, Jarrett Parker and Alex Burg loaded the bases with none out. Luke Anders then grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop as Burg was forced out, however Susac scored on the play to make it 4-0.

Rogers returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and quickly set down Modesto 1-2-3. He then pitched around a one-out single from Parker in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the shutout. Rogers threw 92 pitches, including 65 strikes, during his outing.

Wilson relieved Rogers to begin the bottom of the eighth and allowed a leadoff double to Langfels. It marked the only time in the game that the Nuts had the leadoff hitter in an inning reach base. Wilson though induced Garneau to fly out to left before registering back-to- back strikeouts of Cristhian Adames and Rafael Ortega to end the inning.

In the ninth, Valdez walked Brett Tanos with one out, but then retired Parker on a fly out to right before Crousset struck out swinging.

Gomez (3-5) suffered the loss for Modesto after yielding four runs (all earned) on eight hits in five-plus innings of work. He walked two and struck out six. After allowing Oropesa's two-RBI single in the top of the first, Gomez retired 10 straight Giants hitters until issuing a walk to Parker in the fourth inning. Nuts relievers Chad Rose (3 IP) and Nick Schnaitmann (1 IP) combined for four hitless innings to finish the game.

Notes: The shutout was San Jose's league-leading seventh of the season ... It was their first shutout since May 12 (1-0 win vs. Visalia) ... Over his last six starts, Rogers is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA ... His seven innings on Thursday matched a season-high while the eight strikeouts was one off his career-high (nine strikeouts on July 1 at Stockton) ... The Giants out-hit Modesto by an 8-4 margin ... Oropesa snapped a string of 12 consecutive games without an RBI ... He leads the club and is sixth in the California League with 62 RBI's this season ... Jurica batted leadoff for just the second time this year ... San Jose improved their overall record to 46-45.

On Deck: The Giants and Nuts will play the rubber game of their three- game series on Friday evening with first pitch at John Thurman Field scheduled for 7:05 PM. Jack Snodgrass (7-3, 4.42 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Modesto is expected to counter with Juan Gonzalez (4-10, 6.78 ERA).
