Rodriguez Sharp But Missions Drop a Close One to Travs

San Antonio received a very good start from Bryan Rodriguez, but it was not enough as they fell to Arkansas, 3-1, in front of 5,765 Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.

Saturday featured a terrific pitcher's duel with Rodriguez and Arkansas' Zach Nuding matching zeroes through five.

Rodriguez allowed just four hits through five, but ran into his first trouble in the top of the sixth when the Travs loaded the bases with just one out. Chad Hinshaw cashed in on the opportunity, lifting a sacrifice fly to deep left-center field to give Arkansas a 1-0 lead.

The Missions' right-hander got out of further trouble in the sixth, but allowed another in the seventh on a Bo Way sacrifice bunt.

Arkansas pushed its lead to 3-0 in the eighth when Eric Aguilera connected on a double to left center on Rodriguez's replacement, Ramon Benjamin. Rodriguez (2-5), who got the first two outs of the inning, was charged with the run. The seven and two-thirds inning start for Rodriguez was the longest for a Missions hurler in 2016.

San Antonio's offense could not solve Nuding, who in his first outing with Arkansas, tossed six shutout innings of four-hit ball. Nuding (1-0) threw 50 of his 71 pitches for strikes.

The Missions did break up the shutout bid for the Travs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a Gabriel Quintana RBI triple to right center off lefty Tyler DeLoach.

D.J. Johnson (fifth save) allowed a Nick Torres two-out double in the ninth, but nothing further as Arkansas won for the third straight time overall and fifth straight against San Antonio. Torres finished with a game-high, tying three hits.

San Antonio (15-33) will wrap up both its series and homestand against Arkansas (21-28) Sunday with a special 5:05 PM start. Michael Kelly (1-0, 2.08) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Travs counter with fellow righty Blayne Weller (2-6, 4.41). Following the game, Texas country star Wade Bowen will take the Wolff Stadium stage as part of Mission Mitsubishi's Memorial Day Weekend Celebration. Fireworks will cap what will be a great night at the ballpark.
