Drillers Bounce Back with 8-2 Win over Midland

May 28, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

After being held to only one run the previous night in a loss that ended their season high five-game winning streak, the Tulsa Drillers bounced back in a big way Saturday evening. Tulsa erupted for eight runs and defeated the Midland RockHounds 8-2 at ONEOK Field. The win was the 14th in the past 20 games for the Drillers and moved them back to .500 on the season with a 24-24 record.

Tula's bats came to life early in a big three-run second inning. Willie Calhoun led off with a double and eventually scored the game's first run on a one-out base hit by Brandon Trinkwon. Andrew Toles followed Trinkwon with his fourth home run of the season to give the Drillers a 3-0 lead.

They upped the margin to five with two more runs in the fifth. Trinkwon and Alex Verdugo drew walks, and Jacob Scavuzzo plated them both with two-run double.

Trinkwon contributed again in the sixth when he singled home Paul Hoenecke who had doubled.

Tulsa starting pitcher Trevor Oaks opened with six shutout innings before the RockHounds got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Oaks had surrendered only two hits through those six frames, but the Hounds amassed four hits, including a pair of doubles from Beau Taylor and Franklin Barreto to plate a pair of runs to cut the Tulsa lead to 6-2.

The Drillers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the seventh. Kyle Farmer and Lars Anderson drew consecutive walks to open the inning, and both scored on a one-out double by Cody Bellinger.

The strong outing from Oaks allowed him to improve his Double-A record to 5-1. The right-hander, who opened the season with Rancho Cucamonga in the California League, was charged with the two runs on six hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out five in his seven innings of work. Oaks is now a perfect 4-0 in four starts at ONEOK Field.

Rob Rogers worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Joe Broussard pitched around a walk and a hit batter in the ninth to close out the win. It was the Double-A debut for Broussard.

Hoenecke and Trinkwon led a 10-hit offensive attack for the Drillers. Hitting in the eighth and ninth spots in the order, they each collected two hits. Trinkwon also scored two runs and knocked in two more.

Toles, Scavuzzo and Bellinger each had two runs batted in for the Drillers.

Tulsa is 4-1 on the current homestand and will conclude it Sunday night with the series finale against Midland. The pitching matchup will feature Chase De Jong (4-4, 2.70 ERA) for the Drillers against Corey Walter (0-1, 1.96 ERA) of the RockHounds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM at ONEOK Field.
