Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Frank Schwindel's bounding two-out single up the middle scored Carlos Garcia from second base to lift Northwest Arkansas past Corpus Christi 6-5 in 12 innings Saturday at Whataburger Field before 5,740.
The Naturals broke through against Eric Peterson (0-1) in his second inning of work. Garcia worked a full-count walk and was sacrificed to second by Corey Toups.
Kevin McCarthy (3-1), who whiffed four over three perfect innings, was the winner. Eric Stout earned his second save by posting a 1-2-3 12th.
The Hooks (29-19) unleashed a four-run, four-hit, two-out rally against Matt Strahm during the third. Carlos Gomez singled to right and scored from first on Alex Bregman's double the other way. Derek Fisher picked Bregman up with a single into right-center and J.D. Davis unloaded his ninth home run of 2016 into the Corpus Christi bullpen.
The Naturals (22-26) answered with three runs of their own off Evan Grills. Schwindel, Cameron Gallagher and Logan Moon chipped in with RBIs to score Toups (single), Ryan O'Hearn (walk) and Schwindel (error), respectively.
Grills went on to book another frame, finishing with one earned run, a walk, and two strikeouts.
Strahm logged six innings, seven hits, a walk, and six strikeouts.
Northwest Arkansas knotted things up vs. Francis Martes in the sixth, Zane Evans crossing on Moon's two-out single up the middle. Evans advanced into scoring position as a result of Alfredo Gonzalez's errant pickoff attempt.
Doubles two outs apart from Garcia and Mauricio Ramos enabled the Naturals untie that knot an inning later. Garcia took third when Toups flew deep to right.
Fisher's two-out single scored Gomez as Corpus Christi equalized at 5 with Yender Caramo on the mound after the seventh-inning stretch
Gomez, on a rehab assignment from Houston, had three singles. Bregman has reached base in 22 consecutive games and has an eight-game hitting streak.
Moon finished with three singles.
Left-hander Brian Holmes (3-1) starts for Corpus Christi Sunday at 6:05 in the series and homestand finale. Northwest Arkansas counters with Jake Junis (3-3).
