Rodriguez Reels in Rockers for First Pro Victory

STATEN ISLAND, NY- Anthony Rodriguez tossed five innings for the first time in his professional career, helping to spearhead a 7-3 series-finale win at SIUH Community Park over High Point on Monday afternoon. The game was the final time the Rockers and FerryHawks meet in the regular season, with the first six games of the season series going to High Point

The FerryHawks never trailed on Monday, scoring the game's first run in the third inning. Working against Rockers right-hander Austin Glorious, the FerryHawks received singles from John Nester and Javier Betancourt, before an Angel Aguilar sacrifice fly put Staten Island in front 1-0.

The Rockers had a quick and swift response, tying the game in the next half inning. A double by Quincy Lattimore put a man in scoring position for Johnny Field. The Rockers Centerfielder hit a groundball down the third-base line, which went under Aguilar's glove for an E-5, scoring Lattimore from second to tie the game.

The see-saw game continued, with the FerryHawks vaulting back in front in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Wagner was issued a one-out walk and then stole second base. With Ricardo Cespedes at the plate with two outs and Wagner in scoring position, the FerryHawks right fielder managed a bloop double down the left-field line to push Wagner home for a 2-1 lead.

High Point took advantage of another FerryHawks fielding blunder in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game for the second time. The Rockers rally started with an error by second baseman Javier Betancourt, who botched a groundball off the bat of Chris Proctor. Following a Michael Russell double two batters later, Proctor was pushed home on Ben Aklinski's sacrifice fly to make it a 2-2 game.

The FerryHawks finally took a lead they'd never relinquish in the fifth inning, sending eight batters to the plate for a three-run frame. After Nester and Betancourt were retired by Glorious to start the inning, five consecutive FerryHawks reached base to propel the team in front 5-2. Alfredo Reyes catalyzed the big inning with a two-out bunt single down the third base line. Joseph Monge bunted Glorious next pitch slowly back to the right-handed hurler, but Glorious' throw to first was off-line. The E-1 allowed Reyes, who was stealing on the bunt, to score all the way from first while Monge went to third base. After Ben Ruta was hit by a pitch, back-to-back singles by Agular and Bautista gave Staten Island a three-run lead after five innings.

Glorious (2-2) allowed five earned runs over his five innings, striking out one and walking one.

Rodriguez (1-1) allowed two runs (both unearned) with five strikeouts and no walks.

A Logan Morrison sixth-inning solo blast off of Eric Marinez would be the final time the Rockers scored. Williams Ramirez and Victor Capellan combined to toss the final two innings scoreless and hitless.

A two-run single by John Nester in the eighth inning provided Staten Island with a little insurance, extending their advantage to 7-3.

Staten Island (7-26) continues its homestand by welcoming in the Lancaster Barmstormers for a three-game series starting Tuesday. First pitch at SIUH Community Park is slated for 6:30 PM with the 'FerryHawks Pregame Show' starting at 6:15 PM on the SI FerryHawks YouTube Stream.
