Brockton Rox News Release
Lynn, MA (August 9, 2007) -- LHP Bryan Morse took a no-hitter into the ninth inning in a complete-game 1-0 shutout in Game 1 of a doubleheader and RHP Mike McTamney tossed a complete-game in 3-1 Game 2 victory as the Rox swept the North Shore Spirit in a doubleheader at Fraser Field. Morse and McTamney combined to allow just one run on six hits in 16 innings. CF Matt Maloney had five hits in the doubleheader for the Rox including a three-run blast in the Game 2 victory. The Rox won the series 2-1 against the Spirit and pulled to within six games of first place with the doubleheader sweep. The Rox are now 30-39 overall and 10-13 in the second half.
The pitchers' duel in Game 1 between Morse and RHP Matt Bishop commenced in the bottom of the first inning after last night's weather-related suspension. Morse retired the first eight batters of the game until RF John Welch reached on an error in the third. Morse faced the minimum through six innings as C Lee Rubin caught two runners attempting to steal and Morse forced a double play to end the sixth. Bishop scattered six hits through eight innings and matched Morse pitch for pitch. In the top of the ninth in a 0-0 tie, Maloney ripped a one-out single to left, his third hit of the game. Bishop departed the game in favor of RHP Derek Drage. Maloney stole second, and SS Andre Alvarado poked a single through the right side, scoring Maloney and giving the Rox a 1-0 lead.
Morse retired the leadoff hitter in the ninth, but fell behind Welch, a former Rox outfielder, 3-1. Welch ripped the next pitch to left- center for a single, the first hit of the game for North Shore. Morse walked a batter with two outs to put the tying run at second and the winning run at first, but retired LF Mike Torres on a flyout to left to complete a one-hit shutout.
In Game 2, Maloney continued his hot streak in the doubleheader by crushing a three-run homer in the top of the second inning against his former teammate RHP Gary Galvez. In the bottom of the second inning, C Alex Trezza hit a solo shot off McTamney to bring the Spirit to within a pair, trailing 3-1. Both pitchers settled into a groove. Galvez did not allow a hit after Maloney's homer until the top of the seventh, when Maloney singled again and Alvarado drew a walk. RHP Julio Soriano struck out C Lee Rubin to work out of a jam. Meanwhile McTamney worked out of three separate jams to preserve the 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh and retired the final seven batters for his second complete-game of the year.
Friday at 7:05 PM the Rox send LHP Rolando Viera (7-5, 2.84 ERA) to the hill against the Quebec Capitales in Game 1 of a three game series.
