
Rocks fall in rain-shortened game

Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (25-28) opened up a five game series with the Salem Avalanche (22-30), Carolina League affiliate of the Houston Astros, on Thursday night with a 4-2 loss. The game was rain shortened and called after five and half innings.
The rain started falling in the top of the sixth inning. Wilmington starter Tommy Hottovy pitched a 1-2-3 sixth but the tarp was rolled out with the Blue Rocks coming up to bat in the bottom of the sixth.
The Avalanche jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Hottovy. Edwin Maysonet led off the game with double then moved up to third when Ervin Alcantara singled. Drew Sutton followed up with an RBI single scoring Maysonet to give Salem a 1-0 lead.
Alcantara and Sutton then performed a double steal. Third baseman Andrew Pinckney could not handle the throw from catcher John Otness with the throw going into short left field. Pinckeny was charged with an error and Alcantara came in to score for a 2-0 Avalanche lead.
The Blue Rocks cut the lead in half when Jeff Natale connected for a lead off homer in the second. Natale, fresh off his promotion from Low-A Greenville, connected on a 3-2 pitch to left field in his first at bat in a Blue Rocks uniform.
Salem got the run back in the fourth inning when Billy Hart connected for a two-out solo homer to straight away center for a 3-1 lead. The Avalanche made it 4-1in the fifth inning. With runners on the corners and one out Sutton got picked off at first. In the rundown Maysonet scored from third with Sutton being tagged out by shortstop Iggy Suarez between first and second.
Wilmington again cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when Mickey Hall led off the inning with a triple. Hall then scored when Bryan Pritz followed up with a ground out to the second baseman to make it 4-2.
Hottovy (4-4) took the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings. Hottovy also walked one and struck out six.
Chad Reineke (5-4) recorded the win working five innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
The Blue Rocks and Avalanche continue their series with a double header on Friday night. Game one is scheduled for a 5:05 p.m. first pitch with game two starting 25 minutes after the first game ends. Both games will be seven inning games. Right-hander Matt Goodson (0-2, 3.64) will start game one for Wilmington with Salem throwing right-hander Felipe Paulino (3-3, 3.76). Game two the Blue Rocks will send right-hander Scott Shoemaker (4-2, 4.09) to the hill for his second start of the season. The Avalanche will counter with righty Evan Englebrook (3-3, 2.79).
